Lexus debuts refreshed IS sedan

MANILA: Lexus has unveiled the refreshed IS sedan. The model is still in its third-generation version, though it has been the third time the Japanese luxury marque has updated the XE30 model since its initial introduction back in 2013. 

Per Lexus, the refreshed nameplate will be sold in various markets in 2026 in two trims: the hybrid-powered IS 300h and the IS 350. 

Powertrain

Being a refresh, the new IS 350 has carried over the naturally-aspirated V6 engine from its predecessor. The aforementioned engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic for the rear-wheel-drive version, and a six-speed automatic transmission for the all-wheel-drive version.   The IS 300h, meanwhile, comes with a 2.5-liter inline-4 gasoline hybrid mill paired with an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT). 

At maximum, the IS 350’s six-cylinder engine can produce up to 311 horsepower (hp) and 380 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. The IS 300h’s four-banger, meanwhile, can dish out 219 hp and 221 Nm of torque. 

According to Toyota’s luxury arm, it also improved the refreshed IS sedan’s handling through the use of a new rack-parallel electric power steering system with variable gear ratios.

Exterior

One of the biggest changes made to the refreshed Lexus IS has to do with its exterior design. Specifically, the Japanese marque gave the sedan a larger grille that almost encompasses the entire width of the front fascia. 

The aforementioned is paired with the model’s familiar set of sharp-looking LED lighting fixtures. The internal combustion-only V6 trims come with dual exhaust tips. Specific to the “F Sport” package (available for IS 300h and 350) is a set of newly designed 19-inch lightweight wheels, red-colored brake calipers, and a new rear spoiler. 

Interior

Inside, the updated Lexus IS likewise received a heavily revamped interior. Its new array of amenities includes a red interior colorway called “Prominence,” a new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a similarly sized infotainment system, and the new “Forged Bamboo” trim for its upper console and start switch bezel.

Also added were two high-output Type-C USB ports on the center console, two more in the rear of the console, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. 

When comparing the new model’s cockpit, Lexus also opted to shrink its center air-conditioning vents for a slicker overall dashboard design. The side vents also sport a new shape, and the brand’s signature analog clock was removed. The dashboard in its entirety looks leaner and more minimalist as well.

Safety

The Lexus Safety System+ is now capable of hands-free driving during traffic congestion. It likewise received the Proactive Driving Assist feature, which is capable of anticipating and intervening (automatic speed reduction and steer assist) when the vehicle detects hazards. 

Additionally, Lexus says the car’s pre-collision system can now detect cyclists at night, as well as automatically avoid fender benders from oncoming vehicles at intersections. Its radar cruise control also offers better vehicle detection, while its road sign assist can now determine (and provide warnings) if a driver is not following road signs.
