Mazda 3 gets a diesel engine in Europe and Japan, will it arrive in PH?

MANILA: With emission norms becoming stringent than ever before, many of the carmakers have started to do away with diesel-fed engines for their vehicles. However, markets like the Philippines still crave for the diesel-fed cars as not only these consume the cheaper fuel but are more fuel efficient as well.

The love is so much so that even the higher price tags of the diesel-fed cars do not bother the customers much. And for these customers, Mazda, one of the many Japanese auto giants, could actually turn out to be the saviour.

Wondering how? The answer is simple, the Mazda 3 is being offered with a SkyActiv-D engine in the European and Japanese markets. No, it’s not the 2.2-litre motor that has been seen on the likes of CX-5 and Mazda 6. Instead, it is the smaller 1.8 SkyActiv-D which has previously been found powering the Japan-spec CX-3.

In terms of vigour, the 1.8 SkyActiv-D makes 116 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 270 Nm. The diesel-fed mill can be had with either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission unit. Mazda has claimed that the customers can expect a mileage of 22.2 kmpl from this powertrain.

So, will Mazda bring the 1.8 SkyActiv-D to the Philippines? Well, we hope it does. While the possibilities are quite slim at the moment, we believe in being optimistic and that’s something we’ll continue to be.
