Mini builds 2 exclusive cars with Deus Ex Machina

MANILA: Mini has built two exclusive John Cooper Works (JCW) units with Australian custom motorcycle maker and lifestyle brand, Deus Ex Machina.

Per the British automobile firm, the products of its partnership with the Wales-headquartered company are rolling expressions of a lifestyle where a love of speed meets creativity and considered design. These cars — it pointed out — are built not just for performance, but for the people who live and breathe it.

“Mini models have always been characterized by a blend of creative design and motorsport dynamics,” Mini Head Stefan Richmann was quoted saying.

“Thanks to our collaboration with Deus Ex Machina, we are taking this philosophy to a new level and setting exciting new trends for fans and motorsport enthusiasts. The partners are united by their ‘passion for machines, innovation, and creativity’ and an authentic relationship with their own community,” he added.

The two cars are dubbed the Skeg and the Machina. The former is based on the Mini JCW Electric, while the latter is based on the combustion engine-powered Mini JCW.

According to Mini, the two are built as a pair — kindred in spirit, opposite in energy. One is born from the coast: shaped by surfboards, sea spray, and the stripped-back rhythm of beach life. The other, forged on the track: lean, fast, and fuelled by a love of speed and precision.

“In this extraordinary collaboration, we showcase two vehicles that remind us of motorsport history and successes of Mini. Every single detail has been crafted with artisanal precision and expertise. This has resulted in unique characters that are clearly perceived as belonging together through their distinctive design language and use of graphics,” Head of Mini Design Holger Hampf said.

The Skeg

Outside, the Skeg features a vivid yellow and silver finish. It also has wide fenders, an illuminated front grille, and a roof spoiler, which sharpens its silhouette. Semi-transparent fiberglass panels strip 15 percent of the car’s weight and refines its aerodynamic performance.

Notable exterior features include a Flex Tip Surf Spoiler, tension straps across the roof, as well as some custom-made fiberglass elements.

Inside, the unique machine gets fiberglass trays, a fiberglass dashboard, an oversized “X” visual, as well as some Deus Collection badges and 3D-printed details.

Performance-wise, its electric powertrain is able to generate up to 258 horsepower.

The Machina

As for the Machina, it gets a red, white, and black paintwork, complete with bold accents and Deus lettering on the rear. It also boasts a bespoke grille and perforated headlight surrounds, four additional headlights mounted on the bonnet, widened fenders, and a diffuser at the rear.

The cabin gets a similar red, white, and black palette. It also features raw aluminum floor plates, stripped-back door panels marked with bold white “X” motifs, a waxed fabric dashboard, an exposed roll cage, as well as five-point racing harnesses.

Per Mini, the Machina makes up to 231 horses.
