Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution sedan to get a Renault Megane powerhouse?

MANILA: We covered a story in the month of May, earlier this year, on the possible comeback of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. At that point of the time, the icon was rumoured to come back in the automobile space in the form of a crossover, however, some of the latest reports suggest that the well-celebrated car may actually make a comeback in its own structure, i.e., sedan.

In 2017, Mitsubishi displayed the e-Evolution in Tokyo, and the concept was a crossover. So, the latest news has indeed given rise to confusion. Coming to the rescue, a source from Mitsubishi has cited that there will also be a standard Lancer, and that is what could be the new sedan. More information about the powertrain on the newest Lancer sedan has also surfaced as the car is said to house a 2.0-litre that makes 300 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 400 Nm. This is the same mill that powers the Renault Megane RS Trophy. While power figures are certain to go up, we may also see a hybrid variant.

Not only the engine but the newest iteration of the Mitsubishi Lancer sedan is also expected to feature Renault’s CMF-C/D platform as its underpinning. Both the Megane and Talisman are also underpinned by the same platform. With the Renault Megane already being a very capable sedan, Mitsubishi’s work has certainly become easier and the task of building a brand new Lancer shouldn’t be all that difficult for the Japanese automaker.

Along with the possible Lancer, more new cars like the next-gen Mirage are also touted to be underpinned by the CMF platform. With that said, the future of Mitsubishi in the automobile space looks nothing but interesting, to say the least. If you’re out in the market for a tried and tested SUV with a flair, Mitsubishi recently launched the Montero Sport Black Series in the country. The sporty SUV is based on the GLS 2WD A/T variant and gets a price tag of Php 1,800,000.
