Porsche 911 Turbo S named 2021 World Performance Car

MANILA: The Porsche 911 Turbo S was hailed the 2021 World Performance Car by the World Car Awards. This is the seventh time, a Porsche model has bagged the title. It is also the brand’s eighth recognition from the award-giving body.

The 992-generation Porsche 911 Turbo S was chosen by a distinguished panel of 93 international journalists from a short list of nine performance cars.

The World Performance Car award is given to a model that is performance-focused in terms of character and available in at least two major markets in at least two continents between May 1, 2020 and May 1, 2021. At least 2,000 units of the model must have been manufactured as well.

In a statement, Porsche AG Vice President for Model Line 911 and 718 Steffen Walliser said, “We could not be more excited to accept this award. The 911 Turbo S is the peak of performance and luxury from Porsche, a fact this recognition underscores. With the new generation 992, we continue to push the boundaries of performance.”

In 2020, the 992-generation 911 Turbo S made its debut in the local market. The performance car is motivated by a new six-cylinder, 3.745-ccm boxer engine that generates a power output of 650ps and 800Nm of torque. The powertrain is mated to an eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission, which is exclusive to the Turbo models. The car can accelerate from standstill to 100kph in 2.7 seconds. Its top speed remains at 330kph, which is the same as the previous generation’s.

The 911 Turbo S features performance-focused driving dynamics, which is highlighted by its expanded body. It measures 1,840mm wide above the front axle and 1,900mm above the rear axle. The car’s agile and sporty look is further accentuated by its upgraded aerodynamics and new mixed-size tires. The front wheels are wrapped with 255/35 20-inch tires while the rear wheels are equipped with 21-inch 315/30 tires.

Porsche is aiming to take home another World Car Awards crown in 2022 for its all-electric Taycan four-door sports car. The 2022 edition of the World Car Awards will officially start its evaluations at the New York International Auto Show on August 19. Joining the roster of awards that will be given is the new World Electric Vehicle of the Year award which celebrates the global transition to electric mobility and recognizes the initiatives of carmakers in crafting these eco-friendly vehicles.

The 2021 Porsche Taycan is now available in the Philippines. Its latest version comes with a new permanent magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle. The vehicle features the 911’s iconic rear-engine/rear-drive layout which gives it the same acceleration and handling performance as other Porsche sports cars.

The new Taycan is equipped with 20-inch Taycan Turbo Aero wheels and black anodized brake calipers. The front apron, side sill, and rear diffuser are all painted in black. The sports car also comes with LED headlights, six-piston brakes in front, and four-piston brakes at the rear.
