Team MSCC Mazda Miata takes top podium at opening 2025 Makabayan Endurance Challenge

MANILA: Team MSCC Mazda Miata has taken the top spot of the podium for the opening round of this year’s Makabayan Endurance Challenge.

In a statement, Mazda Philippines shared that the team made up of drivers Angie King, Tyson Sy, Juha Turalba, and Milo Rivera dominated the 2025 Kagitingan Cup — the first leg of the three-round endurance challenge.

The company shared that for the aforementioned competition, the race car was “intrinsically designed and mechanically modified.”

Aside from crossing the checkered flag at the lead, the team broke records for:

• Laps completed
• Fastest laps

The #55 Mazda MX-5 completed 63 laps in the Two-hour race — with the fastest lap time of a minute and 49.8 seconds. For the Four-Hour Race, the team clocked in 120 laps with the fastest lap time of 1:53.7.

Mazda Philippines noted that the modifications done for the race car were mostly focused on making it lighter and faster since the car already had a “solid foundation surrounding performance, reliability, and durability.”

“My inspiration for modifying the car for this year’s Endurance is just to be better. It’s to beat our records last year and make sure that every year, we are progressing to be a faster car, a faster team, a more efficient team,” King shared.

For this year, the MSCC Miata Spec Mazda MX-5 is fitted with the following:

• Ultra-lightweight carbon fiber body kit
• Brembo front brakes
• Cusco coilovers and suspension parts
• HGT six-speed sequential gearbox
• New rear-end differential
• Performance tires

The firm said that the body kit served as one of the biggest improvements made on the car, while the new sequential gearbox aided in boosting the speed up to 4.5 seconds over the previous lap time.

“So far, the first two- and four-hour races were good benchmarks for us to stress test the car, and it seemed to do really well. A week after, Tyson (Sy) drove it on Clark, and he loves how the car’s set-up also,” King noted.

Currently, the MSCC Miata Spec is readying for the forthcoming legs of the 2025 Endurance Race set on June 14-15 (second) and November 29-30 (third) — both to be held at the Clark International Speedway.

“We have a few more modifications coming, just to fine tune the car before we start working on getting more speed,” King said.

To note, a bone-stock Mazda MX-5 is equipped with a 2.0-liter in-line four-cylinder, 16-valve, double overhead cam Skyactiv-G engine that can deliver can do:
