Suzuki Katana teased ahead of the 2018 Intermot
MANILA: From a while, Suzuki had been thinking of reviving the Katana, an iconic superbike from the 80s. At last year’s EICMA, the brand showcased the Katana 3.0 Concept at its booth, though it was a collaborated effort by the veteran motorcycle designer, Rodolfo Frascoli and the Italian firm, Engines Engineering. The concept was built around the Suzuki GSX-S1000F naked bike. Not only this, Suzuki had patented the name ‘Katana’ and its logo earlier this March, further signs of revival.
Now with the release of a new teaser which displays a Sword, Japanese symbols and slogan ‘Feel the Edge’ we might actually see the Katana reborn soon. The mystery covers will be off at the upcoming 2018 International Motorcycle Fair in Cologne (Intermot) slated to happen in the first week of October this year on 3rd. Intermot is the same exhibition where the first prototype of the iconic sportsbike debuted back in 1980. It was then developed by Hans Mouth, Jan Fellstrom and Hans-Georg Kasten, former designers at BMW.
Retro enthusiasts would undoubtedly be excited about the rebirth of the Katana which ruled the two-wheeler automotive market in the early 80s. It first appeared in the late 70s with a German design and soon became a synonym of sportsbike, thanks to its easily-accessible low stature and sporty characteristics. The Katana, however, got disappeared from the market around ten years ago.
2018 Intermot is something we all are eagerly looking forward to and more than us it’s Suzuki who'd like to make the occasion worth-remembering. Because the brand is turning 100 in 2020 which is also the same year that would mark the 40th anniversary of the Katana’s existence. So, let's see how the Suzuki GSX-S1000's counterpart turn out to be.
