Territorial dispute: Ford Territory ICE vs Hybrid
Which model suits you best?
Ford Motor Company Philippines recently bolstered its new-energy offerings in the form of the Territory Hybrid. The compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) complements the newly released model, Mustang Mach-E.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What powers the Ford Territory?
The Ford Territory uses a 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged gasoline engine with direct-injection technology. What powertrain setup does the Ford Territory Hybrid have?
The Ford Territory Hybrid has a 1.5-liter turbocharged hybrid engine paired with a 1.83-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion nickel cobalt manganese high-voltage battery. But can we really consider having an electrified powertrain an upgrade? Today, we pit together the two Ford Territories to find out their differences.
First, our tale of the tape:
|
Length, width, height (in millimeters [mm>) |
4,630 x 1,935 x 1,706 |
4,685 × 1,935 × 1,706 |
|
Wheelbase (in mm) |
2,726 |
2,726 |
|
Ground clearance (in mm) |
190 |
185 |
Based on the table above, the Ford Territory Hybrid appears to be longer, which may result in a stronger road presence. However, the one fitted with a full combustion engine has better ground clearance, which may appeal to more car buyers.
With their dimensions out of the way, here’s what they offer outside.
Exterior
The Ford Territory packs a traditional look that some may mistake for the BYD Sealion 5 DM-i or Tang DM-i due to the large grillework they share, which is flanked by thin strips of lights on each side.
As for the one wearing the American badge, it gets a honeycomb (but more mesh-like) latticework that is bordered by LED headlights with automatic on and off — with follow-me-home — function, as well as LED daytime running lights (DRL). The lower portion of the grille gets a robust-looking bumper.
The side profile of the model wears black claddings on the wheel arches and on the side sills. The lower parts of the doors get silver-hued accents while the windows (and door handles) are surrounded by chrome appliques. It also has a pair of roof rails.
Notably, the Ford Territory rides on a set of 19-inch wheels wrapped with P235/50-series tires.
At the back, it has a distinctive spoiler with an integrated brake lamp, LED taillights, a large enough glass, a power tailgate, and robust-looking bumpers with a diffuser-like garnish.
Meanwhile, the Ford Territory Hybrid appears to slightly tweak the nameplate’s design template. Gone is the fascia that looked like it was taken from BYD’s design books and is now replaced by a modern-looking front end.
Eye-catching is its coast-to-coast LED light bar on the three-dimensional meshwork. The chin is fitted with a long silvery applique that gives the vehicle a look distinct from its non-hybrid brother.
Similar features can be found on its sides, but it uses differently-designed wheels that sort of befit its more eco-friendly character.
At the back, it still provides a familiar silhouette, but the bumper is now more tamed and sophisticated.
The two compact five-seater SUVs offer different designs that reflect the powertrain systems that drive them. Will we still see some changes as we step inside the cabins? Let’s find out.

The cabin of the Ford Territory exudes style that is meant for daily driving. The seats are finished in leather and similar materials can be found all around the interior, such as the steering wheel, dashboard, armrests, and door cards.

Other notable features include:
- Dual-zone automatic air conditioning system with dedicated second-row air vents
- Wireless charger

Likewise, the Ford Territory Hybrid sports similar features but now offers car buyers an Arkamys SoundStage audio system.
Now that we’ve checked out the two models inside and out, let’s talk about their powertrain systems.

Stopping power comes from ventilated and disc brakes, front and back. Suspension-wise, it uses MacPhersons at the fore and a multi-link independent setup at the rear.
Not to be outdone, the Ford Territory Hybrid is endowed with a 1.5-liter turbocharged hybrid engine paired with a 1.83-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion nickel cobalt manganese high-voltage battery. Responsible for gear shifts is a dedicated hybrid automatic transmission — also with a rotary e-Shifter.
Here are its performance figures:
|

147 |
|
Maximum torque (in Nm for ICE) |
230 |
|
Maximum power output (in hp for electric motor) |
