2019 Chevrolet Captiva is a rebadged Baojun 530

MANILA: The Captiva could not have been another Opel-based crossover. The reason? Well, in 2017, GM sold Vauxhall-Opel to Peugeot. However, Chevrolet has recently revealed the second-generation of the Captiva. What is the 2019 Captiva then? This time around, the American crossover is a rebadged Baojun 530. In case you are wondering, the Baojun 530 is a Chinese SUV.

But the car is not entirely a Chinese product as the brand Baojun is a joint venture ran by General Motors and SAIC. The car has been launched in South America by Chevrolet Columbia. Talking about the design language of the SUV, it is a complete rip-off. A pair of slim headlights flank a large grille, which now has a multi-slat setup with the Chevy logo sitting at the centre. Another notable change is the wheels. Both the hood and roofline feature a flat look. And the front bumper gets chiselled corners which as a result provide the SUV with a mean appearance.

Moving to the rear of the car, the tailgate boasts multiple character lines. Interestingly enough, the third window in the 2019 Chevrolet Captiva is smaller compared to the majority of the side glass setup. The flat hood hides inside a 1.5-litre turbocharged motor which is capable of producing 147 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 230 Nm.

The power is delivered to the wheels via a CVT unit. This continuously variable transmission has got six simulated gears. Barring the Latin American market, it is yet to be seen whether other markets across the globe get their hands on the 2019 Chevrolet Captiva or not. What also is unanswered is whether the Asia-Pacific will be served with the new Tracker or 2019 Captiva?
