Ford PH re-issues airbag inflator recall on select models
An age-old issue plaguing the industry that endangers lives
MANILA: Ford Philippines has reissued a service program, colloquially known as a recall, for several 2000s and 2010s-era versions of its popular nameplates.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
How many hours will it take to replace defective Takata airbag inflators?
Ford says that its dealerships can replace defective Takata airbag inflators from two to three hours.Which models are listed in Ford Philippines’ re-issued service program?
Models listed in Ford Philippines’ re-issued service program include the Ford Ranger 2011, Everest 2006 to 2014, Ranger 2004 to 2011, Everest 2006 to 2014, and Mustang 2010 to 2014.The aforementioned, the Blue Oval brand’s local arm says, is linked to defective Takata airbags, which has been a global issue for multiple car brands for the past two decades.
As Ford Philippines explained on its website, the recall is deemed necessary as these Takata airbags might have had their non-desiccated ammonium nitrate inflators go bad due to degraded propellant. The aforementioned is caused by high humidity, high temperatures, and high-temperature cycling - common characteristics of Philippine weather.
With the possibility of inflators failing, airbags may not deploy properly during an accident. This, of course, can result in more severe injuries as compared to having working airbag systems during a crash.
On its website, Ford further explained that a rupture can also be caused by degraded propellant within the inflator. This can send "inflator parts towards vehicle occupants", which again, can cause serious injury or even death.
