Geely EX5 EM-i is 1st car to demonstrate ‘beyond compliance’ crash test in Europe

MANILA: The Geely EX5 EM-i — also called the Starry EM-i in other markets — is the first-ever vehicle to demonstrate what the Chinese carmaker notes as a “beyond compliance” crash test result at the European New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)-accredited Union Technique de l'Automobile du motocycle et du Cycle (UTAC) headquarters in France.

Per Geely Auto, the EX5 EM-i was subjected to a dual-sided serial extreme crash test, where it performed “exceptionally,” directly validating the marque’s leading vehicle safety architecture and its systemic engineering depth. 

“Geely Auto was the sole automaker selected to conduct a live safety demonstration during the ‘Automotive Safety Tech Globalization & Innovation in the Smart Driving Era’ summit, co-hosted by the China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd. (CAERI) and UTAC,” Geely Auto wrote in a press release.

“As Europe's first-ever side-impact test combined with a far-side rigid pole intrusion challenge, this test goes far beyond the current Euro NCAP side-impact protocol, compounding the test’s severity to replicate real-world multi-vehicle chain collisions,” it added.

Side smash 

The test basically mauls the side of the subject vehicle, pressing it against a mast on the other end to test a car’s structural integrity and overall capability to protect its occupants.

Going into detail, the Geely EX5 EM-i was placed between a moving deformable barrier that strikes the side of the vehicle at 60 kilometers per hour. The action pushes the hybrid automobile into a rigid pole positioned on the opposite side, creating a second high-severity impact comparable to a side pole crash. 

According to Geely Auto, it puts an extreme test on the vehicle’s structural integrity, millisecond-level airbag deployment algorithms, and new-energy vehicle battery system protection. 

Nevertheless, the Geely EX5 EM-i maintained an intact passenger cell after the collision. In addition, the restraint systems were deployed with pinpoint precision, the e-CALL emergency rescue system triggered instantly, and the doors unlocked automatically.

“Spanning nearly three decades of automotive manufacturing, Geely Auto has steadfastly adhered to its core philosophy of’Consumer First, Safety First,’” the brand said in a press statement.

“Geely Auto has fused full-domain AI (artificial intelligence) technology to enhance its Comprehensive Safety System 2.0. This evolution shifts the focus from traditional ‘vehicle-centric safety’ to an ecosystem-wide perspective encompassing ‘People-Vehicle-Road-Cloud-Satellite,’ anchoring four distinct zero-accident mobility visions,” it added. 

Geely EX5 EM-i in PH 

Not too long ago, Geely Motor Philippines launched the EX5 EM-i in the country, complementing the already popular EX5 electric crossover and catering to the shifting needs of Filipino car buyers. 

Here are a few notable features offered by the model: 

Powertrain 

Under the hood is a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor mated to a single-speed dedicated hybrid transmission.

The internal combustion mill generates 97 horsepower and 125 Newton-meters (Nm) while the permanent magnet synchronous motor makes 214 horses and 262 Nm of torque. 

Speed peaks at 170 kilometers per hour (kph) and acceleration time from a standstill to 100 kph is eight seconds. 

The Geely EX5 EM-i has an 18.4-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron-phosphate battery, which contributes to its overall range of up to 1,000 kilometers. 

Fit, finish 

Outside, the Geely EX5 EM-i in PH gets LED lighting, a roof rack, a panoramic sunroof, rear privacy windows and windshields, a power tailgate, as well as automatic frameless wipers with rain sensors. 

Inside is are seats with perforated PVC upholstery, a steering wheel with a microfiber leather finish, and an instrument panel with a leatherette surface.

Onboard tech

The Geely EX5 EM-i has a 10.2-inch LCD digital instrument cluster accompanied by a windshield head-up display. 

It also has a 15.4-inch infotainment unit with Flyme Auto in-vehicle system with a high-performance chipset. It too get a 16-speaker Flyme Sound sound system (including two headrest speakers). 

Pricing, variant

The Geely EX5 EM-i is available in two variants, priced from P1.288 million to P1.468 million.
