MG S5 EV achieves 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating

MANILA: The MG S5 electric vehicle (EV) has received a five-star safety rating from the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). 

As the testing organization shared in its report, the model that was tested was variant for the Thai, Malaysian, and Singaporean markets. It is not yet sold locally, but it demonstrates Morris Garages (MG) Motor’s forward thrust when it comes to vehicle safety. 

To further break down its ASEAN NCAP rating, it received a weighted score of 37.90 out of 40 for adult occupant protection (AOP), 16.9 out of 20 for child occupant protection, a perfect score of 20 for safety assist, and 17.50 out of 20 for motorcyclist safety. In total, the model earned a weighted score of 92.39 out of 100. 

Per ASEAN NCAP, the MG S5 EV that it ran through its gauntlet of tests was equipped with a comprehensive safety kit, which includes six airbags, electronic stability control, autonomous emergency braking for Inter-urban scenarios and pedestrians, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, blind spot detection, and automatic high beams - among others.

MG S5 EV: specs

For now, MG Motor Philippines has yet to indicate if the model will enter the market, but be aware that it shares a platform with the locally available MG 4 EV. 

In markets where it is available, the MG S5 EV’s top-spec trims can generate up to 227 horsepower and 350 Newton-meters of torque. Its 64-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery also provides it with a range of up to 480 kilometers (km), according to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). 

According to the brand, the MG S5 EV can be topped up from 10-80 percent battery levels in just 28 minutes. It is likewise capable of accelerating from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 6.3 seconds. 

For the Malaysian-spec top-of-the-line version, the MG S5 EV’s interior features include, but are not limited to, the following:

• 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster
• 60:40 split-folding rear seats
• Leather upholstery
• 1,441 liters of maximum boot space
• Vehicle-to-load functionality
• Power-adjustable driver’s seat
• Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
• One-pedal driving system
• Rain-sensing wipers
• Power tailgate
