New Mazda2 variant is brand’s first self-charging full hybrid

MANILA: Mazda recently unveiled the new Mazda2 Hybrid, which will be officially rolled out throughout Europe starting spring 2022. This new model is the first-ever Mazda to feature self-charging full hybrid powertrain technology. Its powertrain is comprised of a 1,490cc 93hp three-cylinder petrol engine and a 59kW electric motor that jointly produces a power output of 116hp.

The Mazda2 Hybrid can accelerate from a standstill to 100kph in 9.7 seconds and achieves a WLTP combined cycle fuel economy of 70.6 to 74.3mpg and CO₂ emissions of 93 to 87g/km, depending on the specification of 16-inch or 15-inch wheels.

The Mazda2 Hybrid automatically runs in EV mode at start-up — providing smooth, seamless, and quiet running in urban settings with zero CO₂, NOx, and particulate emissions. During regular driving, the power distribution between the petrol engine and the electric motor is regulated for optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Kinetic energy is collected during deceleration and braking and recovered as electrical energy for storage in the high-performance battery.

The battery power level is constantly monitored by an engine-driven generator, eliminating the need for external power to recharge the system. Despite being a compact B-segment model, the new Mazda2 Hybrid has a long 2,560mm wheelbase that provides comfortable seating for up to four passengers. It also has 286 liters of cargo capacity. It comes in three grades: Mazda2 Hybrid Pure, Mazda2 Hybrid Agile, and Mazda2 Hybrid Select. The Mazda2 Hybrid received a maximum five-star crashworthiness rating from Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Program).

The new Mazda2 Hybrid is the newest product of Mazda Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation’s long-standing partnership. It will be a Toyota Motor OEM model, which will be added to the Mazda2 European lineup as Mazda’s own brand vehicle.

Supermini segment customers in the UK will be able to choose between the Mazda2 Hybrid and the recently launched 2022 Mazda2.

The Mazda2 Hybrid is highly significant in the carmaker’s commitment to achieving the goals outlined in “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030,” its long-term technological development vision. In particular, it aims to lower corporate average well-to-wheel CO₂ emissions by 50% by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050 by accelerating the electrification of its fleet.

The Mazda2 Hybrid joins the battery-electric Mazda MX-30 and the Mazda M Hybrid mild hybrid system-equipped 2022 Mazda3, 2022 Mazda2, and 2022 Mazda CX-30 in the brand’s electrified lineup.
