New Toyota 86 gets a sporty version but with no extra power
MANILA: If there is one flaw that the Toyota 86 has, it is the lack of adequate muscle down the engine. You will find many automobile enthusiasts debating on how badly the car needs to have more power or how good it would be to drive an 86 that is immensely powerful.
However, even though the company has released a new sportier version of the 86, it somehow skipped the mechanism part. In fact, the new GR Sport has everything else to make it look like a racy new sports demon but power.
The new Toyota 86 GR Sport gets the aero kit, lower side skirt all around, and boot lid spoiler from the hardcore 86 GT. Along with that, there are disc brakes from Brembo that have four pistons for the front wheels and two for the rear. However, the GR has six pistons in the front and four at the rear.
However, the new GR Sport does have a tuned rear suspension that can enable better handling. It does not get the 17-inch wheels of the GR. The Sport model is available in three different colour options which are Crystal Black Silica, Pure Red and Crystal White Pearl.
Speaking about the mechanism, Toyota has given the same 86’s engine in the Sport model. The same 2.0-litre flat-four cylinder engine which is direct-injected. This engine makes the same power of 207 PS at 7,000 RPM along with a maximum torque of 212 Nm which comes at between 6,400 and 6,800 RPM. The power is sent down to the rear wheels via either a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Toyota will look to expand its lineup in around October, as it would like to include the alloy wheels that are used on the standard GR. Moreover, the steering rack and rear suspension brace could also be included in the update. However, it is not sure whether the number of pistons on the brakes would be increased or not.
