Next-gen Toyota Hilux now in Australia, is PH next?

MANILA: Toyota has launched the ninth-generation Hilux in Australia. The said pickup truck’s introduction in the Land Down Under comes just one month after its initial global debut in Thailand. 

As far as the all-new Aussie version of the popular Toyota-made truck model goes, it didn’t get the battery electric vehicle (BEV) version that was introduced in the Land of Smiles just yet. Instead, the all-electric version will be launched as a follow-up next year. 

Additionally, the Australia-spec version received some choice exterior enhancements courtesy of Toyota Design Australia. The aforementioned is available on the unique WorkMate trim, which is essentially the Aussie equivalent of the Philippine-spec J, otherwise known as the “fleet” variants, and the top-spec off-road oriented Rugged X.

Australia-spec Toyota Hilux: specifications

Similar to the one launched in Thailand, the next-generation Toyota Hilux in Australia uses a 2.8-liter turbodiesel mill capable of producing up to 201 horsepower (hp) and 420 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque on its six-speed automatic transmission trims. On the five-speed manual transmission versions, the said engine can dish out 500 Nm of torque. 

Likewise available on select double-cab automatic variants of the Australian next-gen Hilux is a 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, paired with a start-stop feature for additional fuel economy. 

Unique to the top-of-the-line Toyota Hilux Rugged X is a tough-looking exterior equipped by Toyota Design Australia with front and rear recovery plates, an LED light bar, 18-inch alloy wheels, a hoopless bull bar, a bash plate, a sports bar equipped with a molle panel, and a towing package - among others. 

Inside the higher-spec trims of the Australian next-gen Toyota Hilux is a 12.3-inch infotainment display and a similarly-sized digital gauge cluster. The said screen comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and is linked to a JBL speaker set. 

Other noteworthy interior amenities available to the Australia-spec next-gen Hilux include the following:

• Connected navigation
• Voice commands
• Dual-zone automatic air conditioning
• Smart entry and start system

Availability

In Australia, the next-generation Toyota Hilux ranges from $33,990-$71,990, which is equivalent to around P1.331 million-P2.819 million (at current exchange rates). 

As of this writing, Toyota Motor Philippines has already confirmed the local arrival of the Hilux, though its local specs, pricing, and trims are yet to be revealed. We can expect more information about the next-generation pickup truck when it launches next year, so stay tuned.
