Toyota to reproduce parts of famed 4A-GE engine

MANILA: Toyota, through its Gazoo Racing (GR) Heritage Parts Project, will be kicking off a reproduction and reissue of 4AGE engine parts. 

For the unaware, the 1.6-liter 4A-GE engine series was utilized by the now iconic Toyota Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno models - otherwise known as the AE86 series. The said model has seen a resurgence in recent years, thanks to its increased popularity due to the Initial D anime and manga series. The 4AGE engine itself has also been a mainstay for car builders. 

In fact, Toyota shared that the line of reissued 4A-GE parts will be exhibited at the upcoming “Initial D 30th Anniversary 2days” event to be held at Fuji Speedway from September 13 to September 14. 

Reissued but with modern enhancements

As mentioned above, the specific 4A-GE parts that will be reproduced and reissued are its cylinder head and cylinder block sub-assemblies. 

For the most part, the previously discontinued components will follow the original designs, albeit they will also feature modern enhancements for ensured durability and longevity. 

According to the Japanese car brand, the cylinder head sub-assembly will have an added number of cam cap knock pins to make assembly easier. Its intake ports will also receive a coating process, while its combustion chambers are set to receive additional machining.

The cylinder block sub-assembly, on the other hand, will be produced using a modern honing process for better bore machining precision. Its durability will also be enhanced by using sturdier cast iron. 

Moreover, Toyota shared that it listened to customer feedback with regard to the 4A-GE. Thanks to the aforementioned, the company will make specific intake and exhaust ports of the cylinder head sub-assembly thicker. The brand also made sure that the cylinder block sub-assembly would be easier to install on front-wheel-drive vehicles (transverse mounting). 

Availability

The reproduced and reissued 4A-GE parts will be formally made available by Toyota in May 2026. An exact launch date was not provided, but the Japanese car company said that the start of its preordering period will be announced on the Toyota GR Heritage Parts website.
