Stylish maxiscoot offers oodles of power and features

Yamaha Tmax: top 3 reasons to buy

In the Philippine market, there’s no doubt that Yamaha is going strong when it comes to scooters. Just take a look at the nearest road, and unsurprisingly, one will immediately spot examples of the Nmax, Aerox, Xmax, Mio Soul i, Mio Sporty, and many other nameplates.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the price of the Yamaha Tmax in the Philippines?

In the Philippines, the Yamaha Tmax standard retails at P799,000, while the top-spec Tmax Tech Max is priced at P859,000.
  • How much horsepower and torque can the Yamaha Tmax produce?

The Yamaha Tmax can produce up to 47 horsepower and 55.7 Newton-meters of torque.
  • The aforementioned, of course, is somewhat expected, as the brand has had years of expertise to develop better, more reliable scooters.

Yamaha Motor Philippines, however, also offers an entry into the big-displacement category of scooters, otherwise known as the “maxiscoot.” The aforementioned is called the Yamaha Tmax, and while a bit pricier than the SR400 - Yamaha’s most affordable highway-legal motorcycle in the Philippines, the maxiscoot does offer significant reasons that might dissuade doubters.

So, what are the top three reasons to buy a Yamaha Tmax? Let’s find out here.

    Built for the cruise

Being a larger sibling to the Yamaha Xmax, the Tmax offers a great deal of comfort for both short and long rides.

Due to its body design, the model has a large saddle with a reasonable seat height of 800 millimeters (mm). The sitting position on the model is upright, with the legs and feet comfortably planted on flat footboards.

When the weather gets chilly, the top-spec Tmax Tech Max trim also provides a heating function for its handlebar grips and for its seat. Plus, the top-spec model has an electronically-adjustable windscreen, which Yamaha says is useful for easing upper body strain caused by wind resistance.

Long journeys to unknown thoroughfares are also made easy aboard the Tmax Tech Max due to its connected seven-inch TFT screen. It has Garmin Navigation app integration, and it can handle calls and music through the Yamaha MyRide smartphone app.

And by virtue of being a scooter, the Tmax boasts a huge underseat storage space enough for a full face helmet and some rain gear. The said space was fitted with its own interior light and is, of course, weatherproof.

Moreover, the motorcycle was designed to look great with its abundance of sharp modern touches on its fairings. The aforementioned, however, likewise contribute to the ride’s aerodynamics.

    Other news:

    Power when you need it

Another reason to buy the Yamaha Tmax is its engine. Specifically, it was equipped with a 562-cubic-centimeter (CC), inline-4 gasoline engine with dual overhead cams (DOHC). At maximum, it can produce up to 47 horsepower (hp) and 55.7 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque

With that kind of oomph, the Tmax is already a match against the Kymco AK550 - its closest competitor. For reference, the Kymco-made maxiscoot can produce up to 52.96 hp and 55 Nm of torque.

Sure, the Kymco model is a bit more powerful, but take note that the Tmax Tech Max has a curb weight of 220 kilograms (kg) - much lighter even than the Kymco AK550’s 226 kg dry weight (no fluids).

To put power down, the Yamaha Tmax Tech Max rides on a pair of 15-inch (120/70R front, 160/60R rear) tubeless tires. It also has dual front and single rear disc brakes for optimal stopping power.

Ride quality and handling for the Yamaha Tmax are handled by a front telescopic fork and a rear swingarm link suspension.

    Decent safety kit

Yet another good quality of the Yamaha Tmax, especially the top-spec Tech Max is its wide array of safety gear.

For starters, the top-spec trim of the said maxiscoot was kitted out with anti-lock braking. The aforementioned is paired with a traction control system. It also has a built-in alarm system, combined with its easy-to-use smart keyless function.

Extra visibility, even in inclement weather or at night, is ensured by the Tmax’s array of LED lighting fixtures. Specifically, it has slim dual headlamps equipped with a mono-focus lens, a T-shaped taillight, and integrated flashers.

    Final thoughts

Based on its on-paper specifications, the Yamaha Tmax, especially the top-spec Tech Max, can make for a good cruiser. It has more than enough power to maintain highway speeds, and its array of features is enticing for those seeking a more relaxed way to travel on long journeys on a two-wheeler.

Like we always say, however, people who are interested in getting a Yamaha Tmax should take it out for a test ride first. The aforementioned is crucial for those upgrading from a smaller ride or those coming from a vastly different class of motorcycle, like a sportbike.
