All-new Toyota RAV4 breaks cover

MANILA: Following the teaser photos and the announcement of the all-new RAV4’s livestream reveal, Toyota Motor Company has finally presented its iconic crossover to the public.

The sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 is touted as a vehicle “that allows any driver to enjoy an active lifestyle.”

Presented were three samples of the nameplate. The said variants (Core, Adventure, GR Sport) have been designed to cater to the motoring needs of their target market and make good use of Toyota’s updated hybrid engine.

First, here is a quick look at the three grades:

All-new Toyota RAV4 Core

The all-new Toyota RAV4 Core appears to be the base variant model.

It gets a tough “hammerhead” design with a modern-looking grille. It has discreet claddings that provide protection to the crossover’s common touch points without making it look too rugged.

All-new Toyota RAV4 Adventure

Leaning more towards the nameplate’s ability to go off the paved path, the all-new Toyota RAV4’s Adventure variant gets a larger, taller grille; wider treads; special wheel arch moldings; and a more robust set of roof rails.

There’s a noticeable chunk too on its cheeks, which pairs well with its beefy wheels and tires.

All-new Toyota RAV4 GR Sport

Putting some sporty flair to the outdoorsy appeal of the all-new Toyota RAV4 is the range-topping GR Sport variant.

It draws inspiration from its Gazoo Racing motorsport division and adopts a functional “matrix” grille, front and rear spoilers, as well as wheel design that improves aerodynamic performance and handling stability.

The Gazoo-fied model also gets a wider tread (for improved handling), a set of exclusively tuned suspensions and electric power steering, as well as lightweight aluminum wheels.

Improved hybrid system

According to Toyota, the all-new Toyota RAV4 packs an upgraded hybrid engine with enhanced motor output. Thanks to upgrades to the transaxle, power control unit, battery, and other components, the crossover is able to put out more power to the wheels.

In addition, seamless acceleration and agility when starting off, coupled with the responsiveness of direct driving power, make the all-new Toyota RAV4 a fun crossover to drive.

A plug-in hybrid version is also available. This — in the all-new Toyota RAV4 GR Sport grade — is able to put out some 320 horsepower. Further, a fully charged battery can provide up to 150 kilometers (km) of emissions-free driving with a combined range of over 1,350 km.

Bolstered technology, safety features

The all-new Toyota RAV4 also gets a new-generation multimedia system, which offers a customizable home screen for improved operation tailored to the preference of each individual.

Per Toyota, it also has faster and more accurate voice recognition for more comfortable interactions.

Also bolstered are the Toyota RAV4’s safety features with the Toyota Safety Sense now offering technologies like emergency driving stop system (automatically slows down and stops the vehicle in the event of an emergency) and sudden acceleration suppression (restrains acceleration when it detects excessive or accidental accelerator input).

Sales, release date

The all-new Toyota RAV4 will be sold in Japan before the end of the fiscal year.

It will be successively rolled out to customers in over 180 countries and regions globally.
