Another lap record is done and dusted by Honda Civic Type-R

MANILA: Not only the Honda Civic Type-R is a stunning looking road legal car that can give you ample thrills, the stuff that it features under the hood is also nothing short of “amazing”. And the testament of the fact is the recent event that has seen the Honda Civic Type-R break the lap record at Mount Panorama, the Bathurst 1000 motor race circuit in Australia.

The Civic Type-R at Mount Panorama was driven by Jenson Button, who is a 2009 Formula One world champion, 2018 Super GT Series champion, and Honda ambassador. At the racetrack, Button was driving a factory-spec Honda Civic Type-R which further shows off the capabilities of the Japanese car.

Speaking of the lap time, Button was successfully able to complete the lap in 2-minutes and 35.207-seconds. The lap time is now the best for a front wheel drive production car. Mount Panorama is one of the more challenging tracks in Australia as the 6.213-km long racetrack consists of 23 corners along with a difference of 174-metre between the highest and lowest point.

Earlier, Jenson Button had recorded an unofficial lap time of 1:48.8 in a Formula One car in 2011. The record was set during a promotional event for the Australian Grand Prix. Interestingly, Mount Panorama is not a full-time racetrack as the street circuit is open for public transport for 350 days a year.

Moreover, the “Type R Challenge 2018” program was the inspiration behind the attempt of breaking the lap record for a front wheel drive production car at the racetrack. Previously, Honda engineers have set new lap records with the Civic Type-R at various European race circuits.

“I definitely put the car through its paces and it was a quick time, 2-minutes 35-seconds is a really good time in a front-wheel drive car and it was hot as well, so I think if it was cooler you could go a bit quicker, but I do feel like I got everything out of the car. The Honda Civic Type R really is the perfect car for a time attack challenge like this. And it’s 100 % a road legal car that’s straight off the production line, so to do a 2-minute 35-second lap is fantastic”, said Button.
