GAC Aion UT get 5-Star Euro NCAP rating

MANILA: The GAC Aion UT received a five-star rating in the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) 2026.

Being one of the first mass-produced Chinese brand models to pass the latest rounds of safety tests with flying colors under the new protocol, the hatchback earned the highest rating after passing four stages:

In a statement, the assessors lauded the Chinese marque, saying that while it is still in its infancy in the region, the new model achieves a five-star safety rating, showing good performances in all four stages of safety. 

“The Aion UT has all the latest crash avoidance systems – and, except for the frontal monitoring in relation to a car and motorcyclist crossing a junction, these systems perform well across all test scenarios. With a Crash Protection score of 91 percent and good Post-Crash Safety performance, it proves to be a strong all-rounder,” it mentioned.

Meanwhile, evaluators highlighted that the vehicle “relies too heavily on the center screen for key driving controls.”

“Infotainment scores better with the use of buttons and switches. It dropped points for its road-based speed limit recognition system, which achieved a 68 percent accuracy rate, and the lack of a child presence detection system that issues a warning if a child has been left in the car,” Euro NCAP explained.

On the other hand, the firm attributed the vehicle’s positive performance to its "Dragon-Bone Embraced Structure," wherein 71 percent of the body is made up of high-strength. 

Other structural features that the GAC Aion UT boasts include:

• One-piece hot-stamped dual-ring design
• Extra-wide 180-millimeter crash box
• Roof capable of withstanding up to eight tons of load

Inside, the vehicle comes with a seven-airbag system featuring a 2.1-meter V-side air curtain and a front far-side airbag to reduce possible occupant-to-occupant impacts during side collisions.

Furthermore, the vehicle comes with an autonomous emergency braking system that surpasses legislative requirements, cyclist dooring prevention, and child presence detection.

"Earning the Euro NCAP Five-Star Safety Certification represents the ultimate endorsement from an authoritative international body for the Aion UT’s uncompromised safety engineering," GAC Philippines General Manager Calvin Cheng was quoted as saying. 

"More than just an award, this milestone is a testament to our deep passion and commitment to empower and modernize mobility for Filipinos, bringing world-class safety and cutting-edge electric innovation right to local streets."

In the Philippines, the GAC Aion UT was launched last May, with the local subsidiary selling the vehicle with a P70,000-price cut–retailing it for P998,000 instead of P1.068 million. The model can be had in the following color options:

On paper, the all-new GAC Aion UT measures:

Moreover, the GAC Aion UT is fitted with:

• Rain-sensing wipers
• Power-folding/adjustable side mirrors
• Manual tailgate
• LED exterior lighting fixtures
• Automatic headlamp functionality
• 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels shod in Chaoyang tires

GAC Philippines packaged the Aion UT with an eight-year or 160,000-kilometer (km) basic warranty, along with an eight-year or 200,000 km plan for the traction battery and electric drive, applicable up to the specified milestone.
