Will the Suzuki Carry get a new variant soon?

MANILA: Suzuki Philippines Incorporated (SPH) could be launching a new variant of the Carry soon. This was made apparent by the appearance of the memorandum circular (MVL-2026-5025), which was recently posted by the Land Transportation Office. 

Per the details in the said memorandum, the upcoming Carry variant is a “troop carrier” named “PV.” The agency didn’t exactly define what these are, but the scant details provided indicate it could carry up to 10 occupants, including the driver. The PV name could also mean “Patrol Vehicle.”

If we analyze this a bit deeper, the Japanese brand’s local arm already has a people carrier variant of the Carry. This upcoming one, however, could refer to an open-air body type for easier ingress and egress. The open nature of the body type may also help with patrol duties, as it can provide better visibility for those riding on its seats.

Moreover, the Suzuki Carry PV troop carrier could also come with a back-to-back seating position, in which its two bench-type seats are placed on the vehicle's centerline, rather than the usual jeepney-style configuration with passengers facing each other on parallel bench seats. 

On this note, the troop carrier configuration is already seen on other commercial vehicles used by government entities, such as the Philippine National Police. Some models from other brands that may already come in this body style include the Toyota Hilux. 

Apart from what was already mentioned, the Suzuki Carry PV with the troop carrier body style was also reported to use the same 1.5-liter engine found in the currently available variants of the Suzuki-made vehicle. 

The LTO memorandum likewise shows that it will have the following dimensions:

At the moment, SPH has not yet officially announced the arrival of a new Carry variant, so let us wait for further updates from the company. In the meantime, let’s check out the specs of the locally available Suzuki Carry.

Suzuki Carry: specs

The Suzuki Carry is a ladder-frame, rear-wheel-drive light commercial vehicle available in several body styles. This includes the Dropside, Utility Van, Cargo Van, and the Lineman. 

Propelling the model is a 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine that can produce up to 95 horsepower and 135 Newton-meters of torque. The said engine goes together with a five-speed manual transmission. 

For all variants, the Suzuki Carry was fitted with a heavy-duty rear differential, a front MacPherson strut suspension, and rear leaf-spring suspension. The vehicle also sits on 13-inch wheels wrapped in 165/80 tires. 

Its interior, meanwhile, features a manual air-conditioning system, cup holders, ample storage, a sliding driver’s seat, a manual parking brake, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) seats. 

Price-wise, the Suzuki Carry ranges from P614,000-P798,000, with the Lineman trim being the most expensive.
