Yamaha showcases YECVT capabilities with all-new NMAX Tech Max, Aerox SP
Technology endows riders with ‘power to shift’
MANILA: In its bid to highlight its proprietary technology, Yamaha Motor Philippines (YMPH) has conducted two rider-centric activities featuring two of its well-loved two-wheelers.

How many downshifts does the YECVT offer?
The YECVT provides three downshifts to riders. What Yamaha models is the YECVT fitted into?
The technology is currently found in the Yamaha NMAX Tech MAX and the Aerox SP.In line with its “Power to Shift” campaign, the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer’s local arm hosted two events to showcase its Yamaha Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (YECVT). Such programs immersed riders in the brand’s groundbreaking innovation present on the two nameplates.

Here’s what we have learned during the recently-concluded activities.
How YECVT works
But before sharing how it was enjoyed during the two events, here’s how the YECVT works.
Instead of relying on flyballs and centrifugal force, an electronically-controlled motor pushes the sheaves inside to ensure more power on demand. This innovation gives riders more control over the release of power and improves the efficiency of engine braking.
To take advantage of this feature, riders only need to tap the three-level “Switch” button to downshift. To disengage the function, riders only need to tap the switch for the fourth time or close the throttle.
On the other hand, ride modes can be altered by flipping the lever at the right side of the handle (a portion commonly used for passing light).
Touring in Batangas with NMAX
Last November 23, participants — Zigwheels Philippines included — went on a scenic tour from Pico de Loro to Kaybiang Tunnel using the Yamaha NMAX Tech MAX. The said route was filled with winding curves, steep uphills, and long stretches.
In the said activity, riders were advised to use the touring mode (one of the two drive modes that the model offers) for the maxi-scooter — allowing them to bask in the ambience.
While this is the case, partakers were still able to have full control of the motorcycle’s output, thanks to the downshift feature of YECVT. With it, they were able to do engine brakes should they need to slow down when approaching a curve while maintaining the oomph needed when exiting a bend.
Aerox Track Day
A week after the touring activity, the YECVT’s performance was showcased anew — but this time, inside the Carmona Racetrack with Aerox SP.
Within the controlled racing environment, riders were encouraged to push their track-oriented automatic transmission motorcycle using the Sport mode.
On the said program, participants were able to attack corners and maneuver using the same engine braking feature while enjoying increased throttle response and linear acceleration. This allowed more experienced riders to get better lap performance while being assured that the YECVT is also meant to be used for intense riding conditions.
'Power to shift'
The two activities proved that the YECVT empowers riders with the “power to shift” — be it on long journeys, inside the tracks, or everyday commute.
As of the moment, this proprietary technology is only available in the Yamaha NMAX Tech MAX and Aerox SP but who knows? We might see this feature in other nameplates in the near future.
