2020 Ford Explorer becomes Police Interceptor Utility in the US

MANILA: Everyone waits for updates and facelifts on their favourite cars. However, this time around, the wait is broken in a very different way. The 2020 Ford Explorer is up for people in the US to see, but in a different avatar - as a police vehicle.

Though this is the first glimpse of the 2020 Ford Explorer, it already accounts for around a two-third of all the police vehicles in the United States of America. And back at company’s home country, it has an official designation of ‘Police Interceptor Utility’.

This goes hand-in-hand with the company’s formula of providing the best mobility to the law enforcers and keep the public safe. The new model is a lot more economical and faster than the outgoing one.

The new Ford Explorer is offered in three different engine specifications - a 3.3-litre V6 for the conventional engine and hybrid, and a 3.0-litre EcoBoost (turbocharged). For the transmission, all the variants come mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Thus, paired with an all-wheel-drive and a turbocharger for the engine, it takes less than six seconds for the car to hit an acceleration of 0-100 kmph.

The 2020 Ford Explorer will be making its global debut for the general public soon (expected on January 9). It can be expected that the model for the civilians will be kept the same and there could be an identical engine setup and a new platform.

The 2020 Ford Explorer will be having a different interior setup. The dashboard will be getting a horizontal layout for most of the bits. There could be a floating infotainment display, along with an all-digital centre console.

The new platform has been developed keeping in mind the upcoming electrification drive. This means the addition of a lithium battery pack would not affect the boot space or even the roomy cabin.
