Get ready to say Sayonara to some of the Honda cars
MANILA: In a bid to embrace a fresh global policy, improve efficiency, and lessen the total number of products on offer, Honda will be cutting down multiple vehicles in different segments very soon.
Honda Motor CEO Takahiro Hachigo has cleared that the automaker will build a new platform, ditch several models, and simplify variant offerings in order to achieve the goal.
While the likes of Civic, HR-V, Accord, Jazz, and CR-V are responsible for the most number of sales for Honda, local models like Crider, Pilot, N Series, and others have also been quite fruitful for the Japanese automaker.
Hachigo mentioned that there is nothing wrong with these vehicles and their performance in their respective markets, however, different market needs and adapting to the same is becoming difficult and as a result, the efficiency has been declining lately.
With Honda set to reduce the total number of offerings, it still remains a mystery that which particular models will be ditched. However, the automaker did mention that the new lineup will be one-third of the current portfolio. Additionally, similar models will be either merged or eliminated altogether.
“We will undertake initiatives to further strengthen our inter-regional coordination and collaboration and evolution of vehicle development in order to simultaneously increase the attractiveness and efficiency of both global and regional models,” said Hachigo.
Moving on with the plan, Honda is developing a brand new platform that will be underpinning multiple models across the planet. To kick start the new era, the automaker will bring out a new vehicle next year with the freshly made platform. The foundation will be then be transferred onto more vehicles with the passage of time. According to Honda,
the new platform and expanded part sharing will help in reducing the development hours by up to 30%. The saved time will then be used for different researches.
