Mazda CX-8 - What to expect?

The Mazda CX-8 has first introduced in Japan only three years ago. However, this is its first time entering the Philippine market along with several other Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia. The CX-8 is the Japanese automaker’s attempt in offering something different amidst the popular pickup segment.

Mazda also recently released the CX-9 which bears a lot of resemblance to the CX-8, raising a few eyebrows as to why the automaker would reintroduce the latter now. With the CX-9’s more advanced features, it looks as if they intend to offer the CX-8 as a mid-variant crossover offering — putting it in between the CX-5 and the CX-9.

In lieu of its release, Mazda outfitted the model with a handful of upgrades and design changes. We took a look at what the new Mazda CX-8 has to offer and what we can look forward to when it touches down in the Philippines.

Six or seven seats

The CX-8 is a three-row, midsize SUV crossover. The model will be offered in two variants: the CX-8 AWD Exclusive with a six-seater configuration, and the seven-seater CX-8 Signature. Compared to the smaller CX-5, this model has a larger cargo space — specifically 19 litres more of space. The CX-8’s wheelbase is 2,930 mm, which is 230 mm more than the CX-5’s. This is just 175 mm short of the CX-9’s. Currently, the CX-9 is only being marketed as a seven-seater SUV.

It also borrows a lot of style cues from the CX-5 which, incidentally, is also reflected in the CX-9. The CX-8 sports a chrome-bar grille which can also be found on the CX-9.

Design-wise, all three vehicles share virtually the same look with each only primarily varying in size and proportions.

Two engine offerings

The CX-8 carries the same 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G gasoline engine that also powers the CX-5. This can generate a powerful 190 hp and 252 Nm of torque. While minimal information on driving performance has been released, it’s expected to be virtually at par with the CX-5.

However, Mazda will also be offering a 2.2-litre Skyactive-D engine now for those exploring other engine options. Both engines can be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Customers also have the choice between an all-wheel- or front-wheel-drive.

Superior interiors

The AWD Exclusive’s second-row includes only two individual seats compared to the Signature’s standard three-seater bench. What the CX-8 does have an upper hand on compared to the CX-5 and CX-9 is its spacious cabin and miles of legroom.

All rows guarantee wide headroom and elbow room, making even long car rides a comfortable experience. However, an advantage of the AWD Exclusive is the presence of a center console in between the two captain seats. This cannot be found in the Signature.

Mazda also stepped up their interiors by swapping out their old upholstery with luxurious Nappa leather in a reddish hue exclusive only for the CX-8. Customers can also request for seats with heat and ventilation capabilities for the first and second row. Mazda has also thrown in a new frameless rearview mirror with auto-dimming technology. The speedometer can also now be viewed via a seven-inch screen.

Standard safety features

All variants are equipped with six airbags. The CX-8 Signature has additional advanced safety features such as blind-spot monitoring and an alert feature for rear cross-traffic.

Other features include radar-assisted cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and Smart Brake Support, lane departure signals, and driver attention alerts.

Additional tech features

Compared to the CX-5, the CX-8 comes with a handful of new tech features. All variants come with an 8-inch infotainment system and a 12-speaker Bose sound system. It’s equipped with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The most notable would have to be the electronic control adjustment feature. Power controls are available for sliding and reclining seats. To tap it off, the seats can fold with just a push of a button.

Price list

Here is a look at the Mazda CX-8 price in the Philippines -

Mazda CX-8 Signature (7-seater) P2,290,000
Mazda CX-8 AWD Exclusive (6-seater) P2,450,000

The prices are in the same range as other models in the pickup segment. It’s also not that far off from the CX-9’s prices. However, the CX-8 does surprisingly have the complete Mazda Activesense safety suite.
