Re:Nissan progress
Just last year, the company began downsizing its operations across the globe.
The highly anticipated Nismo festival last year got canceled.
It sold its Yokohama headquarters (and leased it back) to modernize other facilities.
The company also turned over its manufacturing facility in South Africa to Chinese automaker Chery.
But although it appeared that the firm was riding a sinking ship, the moves it made were targeted to help Nissan position itself for a comeback.
“Cost-reduction initiatives under Re:Nissan are delivering tangible results,” the company wrote in a press release.
“The improvement reflects ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency across manufacturing, purchasing, R&D (research and development) and other business functions, supported by disciplined expense management, and a continued focus on operational excellence across the company,” it added.
Just a few months back, Nissan staged the first Nissan Festival in the country; it expanded the Patrol nameplate with a new trim; launched the all-new X-Trail e-Power at the Philippine International Motor Show; and even partnered with local toymaker Quiccs Maiquez to market its four new electrified models.
To top it off, Nissan will launch the updated Kicks e-Power locally this month.
In the United States (US), Nissan’s “Built in the US for the US” strategy continues to sustain momentum and strengthen competitiveness. As a result, the company remained the fastest-growing mainstream brand over the past 10 months and has achieved 16 consecutive months of year-over-year retail sales growth.
Meanwhile in Japan, Nissan is building momentum through a renewed product lineup and stronger customer demand. According to the brand, customer response to the all-new Kicks and all-new Elgrand has been encouraging, with cumulative orders reaching 11,000 and 8,000 units, respectively, supporting early signs of a sales recovery.
In China, Nissan is executing a strategy to rebalance and revamp the business through disciplined inventory management, accelerating new-energy vehicle momentum led by the N6, N7, NX8 and Frontier Pro, and expanding into overseas markets.
2026 outlook
Nissan has revised its 2026 sales volume outlook from 3.3 million units to 3.15 million units.
The company’s outlook for the year reflects external headwinds, including rising raw material costs and geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, as well as opportunities from favorable foreign exchange, one-time gains realized in the first quarter, and other mitigating factors.
“The environment remains challenging, particularly in China and the Middle East, but our direction is clear. We are managing disruption where it exists, building momentum where we see opportunity, and executing Re:Nissan with discipline and urgency,” Nissan Motor Company Limited Chief Executive Officer Ivan Espinosa was quoted as saying.
“Across our key markets, we are adapting our strategies to changing conditions, strengthening product competitiveness, improving our cost structure and becoming more agile as a company. Our focus is unchanged: creating value for customers, improving profitability and free cash flow, and building a stronger, more resilient Nissan for the long term,” he noted.
