Toyota launches all-new Hilux in Thailand

MANILA: Toyota has introduced the all-new Hilux in Thailand.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much range can the all-new Toyota Hilux Travo-e provide?

The Toyota Hilux Travo-e can cover up to 315 kilometers from a single full charge.
  • What are the variants of the ninth-generation Toyota Hilux?

The ninth-generation Toyota Hilux, which was launched in Thailand as the Hilux Travo, is available in the Land of Smiles as the Standard Cab, Prerunner, and Overland.
  • The pickup truck's lineup in the Land of Smiles (called the Hilux Travo) includes a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) and several internal combustion turbodiesel trims.

All the while, the newly released Thai-spec Hilux Travo lineup still uses the same Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform as the Philippine-spec Hilux, Toyota Fortuner, and Tamaraw.

To note, the model’s trim lineup’s inclusion of a BEV is part of the Japanese brand’s “multi-pathway approach,” which is seen to provide multiple options for buyers as it works toward achieving carbon neutrality.

Here's what the latest Toyota Hilux offers in our neighboring country.

    Powertrain

The main highlight of the ninth-generation version of the Hilux is the Travo-e BEV variant. At maximum, the said model’s dual eAxle powertrain can generate up to 193 horsepower (hp). It also boasts a range of 315 kilometers (km), thanks to its 52.9-kilowatt-hour battery.

According to Toyota, the battery pack of the Hilux Travo-e is packed under its floor. It likewise uses a De-dion leaf spring suspension system, which is touted to provide it with better stability and a smoother ride.

For charging, the Toyota Hilux Travo-e is available with a CCS2 direct current (DC) port with a maximum power capacity of 125 kilowatts. It also has a slower alternating current (AC) 11-kW port.

As for its other Thai-spec trims, the Prerunner  and the Overland all come with the upgraded version of the familiar 2.8-liter turbodiesel, which now has an idle-stop-start feature for improved fuel efficiency. At maximum, it can still produce up to 201 hp and 500 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.

Available transmissions for the Toyota Hilux Travo variants are a six-speed automatic and a six-speed manual. Depending on the trim, the vehicle comes with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with a rear differential lock. It also appears that the all-new Toyota Hilux Travo has dropped the 2.4-liter GD engine, although older versions still sold in Thailand as the Revo retain the smaller-displacement mill.

To note, the Toyota Hilux Travo-e stands as the most expensive trim of the pickup truck model. The Thai market top-spec variant of the Hilux Travo turbodiesel lineup, on the other hand, is the Overland.

Specifically, the model’s front end now sports a more angular lower front bumper, a flatter square-shaped mesh grille, and a sharper-looking pair of LED headlamp clusters. Its hood also received a tougher appearance, courtesy of dramatic bulges on its flanks.

Otherwise, the side portion of the truck still comes with beefy fender flares, side step boards, and power-folding side mirrors.

In contrast to the adventure-ready Overland trim, the Hilux Travo-e has a slicker overall feel thanks to its smaller front vents and its flatter hood. Then again, the model retains the same high-riding stance as its internal combustion siblings.
