BMW 5 Series to dish out mild hybrid variant in November

MANILA: European luxe brand BMW is geared towards making the BMW 520d “slightly green” come next month. This premium sedan will have a mild-hybrid variant. Know more about the details below.
The upcoming 520d will have the latest update—fitted solely for the 5 Series (yet)—will have a 48V starter-generator that is connected to a second battery which will provide juice to the electrical components of the vehicle. The starter-generator technology is said to dish out very minimal vibration when transitioning between the two powertrain modes.

Since the mild-hybrid options will be available in 520d Sedan and Touring models in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, it means the gasoline-powered counterparts in the 5-Series will be pretty much left behind (at the moment).

The said vehicle gets the hybrid power via its brake energy regeneration system, which means it will give more oomph through its electrical overboost feature.

While everyone is yet to know how much power will the overboost provide, the current offering has enough power already: 0-100 kmph in 7.3 sec and can reach speeds of up to 235 kmph.
Right now, the BMW 520d is powered by 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine that can dish out a maximum of 187 hp and 400 Nm. Since the 520d is diesel, which emits more air contaminants compared to gasoline engines, BMW is breaking such stigma, as the sedan is reportedly emitting only 108 g/kilometer of Co2.

Further, fuel efficiency scores for the upcoming 520d is eyed to be reduced by around 3 kilometers per liter. The figures would not be much of a difference with the current model unless you are dishing out big kilometer readings, but hey, you will be doing it for the world (and a penny saved is a penny earned, right?).
