Double Treat for Mazda MX-5, Wins World Car & World Car Design of the Year

MANILA: New York International Auto Show 2016 has turned out to be a fruitful affair for the Japanese auto manufacturer, Mazda as its roadster has grabbed two prestigious awards, World Car of the Year and the World Car Design of the Year. This is the first occasion in the history of automotive awards that the same model has been chosen for both the titles.

The third generation MX-5 has outclassed a total of 23 models in order to bag the ultimate title against its name. The sole criterion to be a contender for the race to title was that the model must have been on sale in at least two continents from 1st Jan, 2015 to 31st May, 2016. MX-5 came out with flying colors turning down the competition from the German giants, Audi and Mercedes-Benz with their respective models, A4 and GLC.

It has been a productive phase for Mazda that further indicates good signs for the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 with retractable fastback, which will grace the show in Manila next month. A lot of buzz about the same is doing rounds in the automotive world and what exactly the automaker has to offer the world.

Talking about the World Car Design of the Year, MX-5 was up against the likes of Jaguar XE and Mazda CX-3, which it managed to turn in its favor. The Executive Officer and General Manager of the Design Division of Mazda, Ikuo Maeda said, “I'm very proud to accept this award, proof that our designs can connect with people all around the world. Our new-generation lineup has been designed under the KODO design theme which aims to bring cars to life, and we've continually refined the beauty of its forms. Mazda is a proud Japanese brand and we are determined to continue enhancing our designs moving forward.”

Established back in 2004, World Car of the Year Award has marked its significance in the automotive world and is regarded as one of the top automotive awards around the world in terms of media reach. Constituting a panel of 73 automotive journalists from 23 countries, the jury members were appointed on the basis of their skill, expertise, credibility, experience and influence by the World Car Steering Committee.
