Ford PH to bolster Explorer lineup with new Platinum variant?

MANILA: Ford Motor Company Philippines could be looking to reinforce the Explorer nameplate by adding a new Platinum variant to the midsize sport utility vehicle’s (SUV) sole-model roster. 

The Land Transportation Office has released homologation papers approving the release of a new grade powered by a 2.3-liter gasoline engine with an automatic transmission and a four-wheel drivetrain. 

At the time of writing, the Blue Oval brand’s local subsidiary only has the Ford Explorer Limited in its stable. It uses a similarly-sized gas-fed powerplant with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Ford Explorer Platinum: what to expect? 

In the United States (US), the Ford Explorer Platinum comes with the following exterior appointments, on top of a cleaner look: 

• Adaptive LED headlamps 
• LED fog lamps
• LED taillamps 
• Power liftgate 
• Rain-sensing wipers 
• Body-colored door handles 
• Satin Chrome and Ebony grille 
• Lower bodyside cladding (Black with Satin Aluminum insert) 
• Skid plate elements (Silver-painted, front and rear) 
• Satin roof rack side rails 
• Body-colored rear spoiler 
• Molded-in-color Black rear bumper step pad 
• Silver-painted skid plates 
• Power side mirrors 
• Privacy glass

American customers are able to opt for quad chrome exhaust tips. 

Here’s what the US market Ford Explorer Platinum offers, cabin-wise: 

• Heated, leather wrapped steering wheel
• Leather-upholstered seats (heated and ventilated)
• Second-row captain’s seats with E-Z entry and armrests
• Digital instrument panel 
• 12.3-inch color LCD productivity screen 
• Bang & Olufsen sound system 

The Ford Explorer Platinum variant sold in the American region slots just below the range-topping ST trim and retails with a starting price of USD52,525 or approximately P2.974 million.
