Meet the Mitsubishi eK X, a bold Kei car
MANILA: Kei cars may not be a thing in the Philippines, however, the Japanese just loves this particular segment. And Mitsubishi, the Japanese automaker has brought out its newest Kei car, the eK X. But wait, the X is pronounced as “cross”.
So, we better call it the Mitsubishi eK X(cross), and not Mitsubishi eK X(eks). What is more interesting than the name of the car is the design language it boasts. Of late, Mitsubishi has been revamping its lineup with a new bold and aggressive styling technique. eK X follows the suite and features slim LEDs on the corners of the hood and chunkier headlamps housing in the bumper.
We have already seen the identical design philosophy in Mitsubishi Strada, Xpander, and ASX. A small car featuring this husky appearance may look quirky but we’re pretty sure that the eK X will do great in alluring customers.
This Kei car has been build by both Nissan and Mitsubishi and was unveiled around a week ago. A floating roofline and blacked-out pillars can also be seen on the eK X. The rear end of the car is bolstered by a flat type tailgate and high mounted taillamps.
Overall, the Mitsubishi eK X looks very much like an MPV, albeit in the form of an infant. Inside the eK X, we see a floating dashboard and a split bench seat. The climate controls buttons get a distinctive setup and there is also a touchscreen. With the small size, the Mitsubishi eK X can only accommodate four people.
As there are numerous regulations limiting the dimensions and engine size of Kei cars, the Mitsubishi eK X houses a turbocharged 660 cc three-cylinder engine that produces 63 PS of maximum power. Talking of the dimensions, while we do not have exact figures, as per the Kei car rules, the eK X cannot be longer than 3,400 mm, wider than 1,480 mm, and taller than 2,000 mm.
