New year, new ride: Mitsubishi Xpander Hybrid
Hybrid MPV could further boost sales, position of nameplate in PH
There is no doubt that the Mitsubishi Xpander is the most popular multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in the country, which is why some people are wondering why the Philippine subsidiary of the Japanese carmaker has not brought in the electrified version of the model — like many other brands do to their notable nameplates.

It dishes out up to 114 hp.Late last year, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) has refreshed the Xpander and Xpander Cross, with the lead-up to the update got fans thinking that the hybrid version of the MPV might just be around the corner.

For those wondering what is in store once the hybrid MPV hits Philippine shores, here is a quick look at the model’s specifications.
Exterior
Outside, the Mitsubishi Xpander HEV in the Land of Smiles adopts the MPV’s second-generation looks, so it shares striking similarities with the nameplate’s latest iteration here in the country.
For a quick look at the updated Mitsubishi Xpander and Xpander Cross, check out the video below:
At the fore is a more refined grille with thin vertical slats that give it a more cultured character. This type of latticework best suits city dwellers as its appearance befits drivers who are stylish. Not to miss is the HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) badge on the meshwork that lets everyone know this Mitsubishi Xpander is on the sustainable side of the automotive spectrum.
Of course, we cannot forget the Mitsubishi Xpander’s T-shaped headlamps, which use LED technology. There is also the daytime running lamp that also gets the LED treatment.
The lower front bumper, too, is updated with a more sporty appearance. Called the “aero-blade skirt,” it has strong horizontal lines that add character to the family mover.
Onto the sides of the Mitsubishi Xpander HEV are angular shoulders that create an image of strength and security. Body-colored door handles, wheel arches, and side sill garnishes reinforce its city character; while the blacked-out pillars that go well with the black roof give it a dash of sportiness.

At the back, it gets a discreet roof-mounted spoiler and a decent-sized window. These are flanked by smoke-clear LED rear combination lights that echo the T-shaped structure at the front.
Underneath the hydraulically-assisted tailgate is an updated bumper that has the same aesthetic feel as the front bumper.
In Thailand, they also offer genuine accessories for the Xpander HEV. Here is a list of the items that can elevate the cosmetics of the MPV:
- Engine hood emblem
- Side visor
- Rear spoiler
- Door handle protector
- Fuel lid garnish
- Luggage tray
- Floor mat
Some tech updates are also available via the genuine accessories section of Mitsubishi Thailand:

Inside, the Mitsubishi Xpander HEV continues the modern looks we spotted outside.
The driver (as well as the passengers) will be treated to a seat with synthetic leather upholstery and a three-spoke steering wheel wrapped in leather, and with multi-functional controls. Past it is an eight-inch colored LLCD meter panel that displays various details that relate to the hybrid powertrain system, such as battery level and the energy flow.
Sitting atop the dashboard is a 10-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, that doubles as a rear camera for backing up in tight parking spots.

Final thoughts
Bringing in a hybrid version of its popular MPV makes all sense as the Mitsubishi Xpander is often used as a family car, both for daily commutes as well as for spontaneous weekend trips.
On that note, many owners would appreciate not having to switch cars on their coding days as full-hybrid vehicles also count as those exempted from the number coding scheme in the metro.
Further, the added savings in fuel will help a long way.
Should MMPC decide to bring it soon, we reckon it will be launched either at the Manila International Auto Show or at the Philippine International Motor Show.
