Suzuki Jimny gets a 3-star rating at Euro NCAP crash test

MANILA: The new generation of Suzuki Jimny is presently one of the most anticipated off-road vehicles. The kind of retro-styling it gets along with the off-roading capabilities within a small body is quite commendable. All of these elements make us want the 2019 Jimny to be launched soon.

However, there is now one thing that would lead us to not want the Jimny that bad, at least till the mistakes are rectified. A new video of the car has emerged from Euro NCAP, which does not look very impressive and all we could say about this is, small cars do not fare very well.

One of the foremost issues with the 2019 Suzuki Jimny at the NCAP crash test was that the front airbags aren't good enough to prevent the occupants from dashing their heads on the steering. This could be clearly seen in the slow-motion shot of the frontal offset crash. This crash also deformed the cabin and lacked proper chest protection for the driver.

Also, the full-width frontal crash showed that some bits of the dashboard broke off and could injure the front occupants on the face or body. Hence, even if there was protection for the leg of the front occupants, the car could not fetch a better score here.

The AEB (autonomous emergency braking) system did function well to reduce the speed from 30 kmph to 9 kmph for jaywalking-pedestrians. Moreover, the system prevented crash with a vehicle in front at a city speed of 50 kmph and also at an inter-urban speed of 65 kmph.

The total score, including the crash test and AEB, the Suzuki Jimny could only fetch three stars out of five. In details, the Euro NCAP alotted 84% for child protection, 73% for adult occupants’ protection, 52% protection for vulnerable pedestrian (due to lack of pedestrian head and leg impact) and just 50% for the Safety Assist.
