Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Hybrid launched in Europe

MANILA: Toyota has officially launched the hybrid version of the Land Cruiser Prado in Europe. Specifically, it boasts a mild-hybrid 48-volt powertrain that is touted to provide more performance and comfort for both on-road and off-road applications.

Specifically, it combines a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine with a Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission, an electric motor-generator, a direct-current power converter, and a lithium-ion battery. 

To note, the 2.8-liter mill on its own can produce up to 201 horsepower (hp) and 500 Newton-meters (Nm). The hybrid system, meanwhile, can provide an additional 16 hp and 65 Nm of torque. 

As expected, the model comes with a 4x4 drivetrain, while retaining the nameplate’s 700 millimeter maximum water wading depth as the electric motor was positioned high on its engine block. 

For better efficiency, the model also comes with regenerative braking and an engine start-stop function. 

Otherwise, the newly introduced Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Hybrid for Europe retains the same boxy styling, as well as the same set of exterior and interior equipment as the one that first debuted globally back in August 2023. 

Availability

According to the car brand, the Land Cruiser Prado with the 48-volt hybrid mill will be made standard on all European markets due to tightening emissions laws. Its first model rollout to customers, however, won’t happen until the end of the year. 

Regarding the local market, Toyota Motor Philippines has yet to confirm whether it will introduce the Land Cruiser Prado Hybrid. However, Zigwheels Philippines believes it could be a suitable option for those seeking an upmarket diesel-powered sport utility vehicle (SUV). The now-discontinued fourth-generation J150, after all, was sold locally with both a gasoline and a diesel version. 

Philippine-spec Toyota Prado

For those unaware, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is referred to as the “Toyota Land Cruiser” in Europe and other markets. The one that received a new hybrid powertrain belongs to the current J250 next-generation model, which was introduced locally in July 2024. 

Currently, the said SUV nameplate retails for P4.806 million in the local market. Instead of a turbodiesel engine, it utilizes a 2.4-liter turbocharged gasoline four-banger capable of producing up to 277 hp and 430 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four of its wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
