Yes, the Toyota GR Yaris just sold out in Mexico in under 24 hours

MANILA: As the local market awaits the upcoming release of the 2021 Toyota GR Yaris, our friends south of the US border just gave us a glimpse of how in-demand Toyota’s hot hatch really is. In a span of just 24 hours after launch, all 300 of the available models were sold and accounted for. 

Toyota opened the pre-order page on April 15, 2021 for the 2021 Toyota GR Yaris, and not more than 24 hours passed before buyers started to report that they were put on the waiting list for one of the most anticipated cars of the year. 

We sang praises for the 2021 Toyota GR Yaris as this most certainly is a step in the right direction for Toyota and is a fulfillment of Toyota President Akio Toyoda’s promise of “no more boring cars.” It features Toyota Gazoo Racing’s "Functional Matrix” grill that not only serves a huge purpose for the car’s performance by housing its internal performance components but also gives it a more aggressive fascia never before seen on a Toyota in recent decades.

The 2021 Toyota GR Yaris claim to fame is its acclaimed, bespoke Gazoo Racing G16E-GTS turbocharged, 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine. For what is basically a subcompact hatchback, it’s crazy to think that under that hood lies 260hp and 360Nm of torque going to all four wheels thanks to Toyota’s GR-Four 4WD system. It would be terrifying to see this tiny hatchback go from zero to a hundred in under 5.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 230kph. 

A steep Mex$20,000 (about P47,000), that was required as a reservation fee didn’t stop our Mexican friends from being one of the few to drive it home once it is available. You might not want to hear about the GR Yaris starting at Mex$699,900 there (roughly P1.7 million) while we get the hot hatch for P2.65 million once it arrives here.

It is expected that customers will still flock in droves to plop down the amount just to get their hands on the one-of-a-kind 2021 Toyota GR Yaris.
