Yamaha Aerox Standard: Yays and nays

To much fanfare, Yamaha Motor Philippines (YMPH) launched the new Aerox earlier this month. The mid-size city scooter is now touted as a sportier ride for motorcycle enthusiasts who want a reliable daily driver and a capable weekender.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What powers the Yamaha Aerox Standard?

The Yamaha Aerox Standard is powered by a 155 cc engine mated to a V-belt automatic transmission.
  • How much power can it make?

The Yamaha Aerox can put out as much as 15 horses with 14 Nm.
  • Offered in two variants, the entry-level Standard trim comes in as an affordable — more appealing option — for many motorcycle buyers. Today, we take a look at its pros and cons to help those eyeing the new model better understand the two-wheeler, before they splash the cash.

On that note, here are the yays and the nays of the Yamaha Aerox Standard.

    Pros:

The Yamaha Aerox Standard comes packed with a handful of features that make it a good pick for those in the market for a new automatic scooter.

    Aggressive styling

The Yamaha Aerox Standard offers a more aggressive look, especially when compared to the motorcycle’s previous generation.

At the fore, the automatic scooter gets a more angular headlamp that matches its new aggressive character. Scoring some serious style points is the faux forged carbon fiber trim that appears to nestle the new two-part light cluster.

Some distance upward is a striking fairing that accentuates the front end of the motorbike. A little ways further is a small windshield with a smoked effect.

A short front fender rounds up the motorcycle’s fascia.

To its sides are short handlebars wrapped in comfortable rubber grips. Two towering side mirrors (also boasting an angular design) can be found on each side of the front cowling.

Its side profile is sleek with some bulk. The combination the two gives it an aerodynamic appearance that offers a level of assurance to riders that the motorcycle is stable in various riding conditions.

As a form of design continuity, the forged carbon fiber trim found under the headlamps can also be spotted on the inner fairings of the Yamaha Aerox Standard.

The saddle looks comfortable and has decent cushioning for both short and long rides. A folding metal step bar can be found on the motorcycle’s flanks — should a pillion rider partake in the journey.

Noticeable too from this angle is the Yamaha Aerox Standard’s beefy exhaust pipe.

At the back, the latest iteration of the automatic scooter comes with a tapered tail with a sharp-looking light. The said feature ensures visibility and functionality without compensating the two-wheeler’s style. To each of its sides are protruding signal lights.

It also gets a decent-sized fender with an integrated plate holder.

Overall, the Yamaha Aerox Standard looks the part for a motorcycle touted as a sporty automatic scooter. It is available in the following colorways:

    • Race Blu
    • Glasses Blue
    • Yamaha Black

    Refined ride

Powering the Yamaha Aerox Standard is a refined 155 cubic-centimeter gasoline engine with the motorcycle manufacturer’s Variable Valve Actuation and Blue Core technologies.

On paper, the said features should make the motorcycle offer both performance and fuel economy.

Per YMPH, the engine used by the Aerox Standard is able to strike the ideal balance between “acceleration, fuel economy, and reliability,” words that sound enticing to motorcycle enthusiasts who plan to use their bikes not only for daily commutes, but also for spontaneous weekend rides.

Here is a table that shows the performance figures of the Yamaha Aerox Standard:

    Maximum power output (in horsepower)

    15.1

    Maximum torque (in Newton-meters)

    14.2

A V-belt automatic transmission ensures smooth acceleration and even power delivery. This means the motorcycle is fairly easy to drive and its acceleration pattern is also easy to get used to.

    Simplified safety

Despite being a base model, the Yamaha Aerox Standard still offers some level of safety to riders — making it a motorcycle suited not only for seasoned veterans but also for beginners.

Making the motorbike more stable are its super wide tubeless tires. Unlike the skinnier ones, these will prove to be easier to ride on when the road gets bumpy or when riding in the rain.

Since they are tubeless tires, they also won’t go flat quickly as these tires are known for their ability to hold off the punctures and not deflate entirely — at least as long as you keep them rolling.

Likewise, as long as the rider keeps a tire repair kit in his or her bag, the puncture can be addressed quickly — allowing the ride to continue without having to bring the bike to a service station or a roadside “talyer.”

In addition, the Yamaha Aerox Standard uses disc brakes, front and back. This ensures ample stopping power for smooth decelerations or for sudden halts. Disc brakes are also known to perform better in both wet conditions and also sustain braking power in hot climates due to its heat dissipation properties.

Suspension-wise, the motorcycle uses a basic telescopic fork at the fore and a unit swing dual-shock absorber setup at the rear. While they seem to lack the complexity of advanced suspension systems, their simplicity make them ideal for everyday use.

    Future proof

The Yamaha Aerox Standard is also fitted with technological features that will not become obsolete anytime soon, which makes it a good choice for tech-savvy riders.

Providing owners with relevant riding information is a digital instrument cluster with good visibility in both broad daylight and in the darkness of night.

It also gets the Yamaha Y-Connect smartphone integration technology, which allows riders to receive real-time data on fuel efficiency, engine diagnostics, battery status, maintenance reminders, and even last parked location. The accompanying app keeps riders informed and ahead, offering peace of mind and seamless tech-enhanced ownership.

Should the battery level of their smartphones become low, the Yamaha Aerox Standard offers a built-in USB type-C power socket in the motorcycle’s inner left-hand pocket. This can be used to charge devices and keep them powered either on daily commutes or long trips.

    Other convenient features

In addition, the Yamaha Aerox Standard also offers other convenient features, which we have listed below:

    • 5.5-liter fuel tank
    • 24.5-liter underseat storage

    Cons

While the Yamaha Aerox Standard offers a wealth of useful features, it does lack some appointments that one might want in a daily-driven motorcycle.

    Here are a few:

    No ABS

As we all know, having an anti-lock braking system helps a lot when it comes to safety. The said technology prevents the wheel from locking-up during heavy braking, which results in improved stability and control when decelerating.

Those who want ABS in their motorbikes can get it on the range-topping variant of the Yamaha Aerox — the SP.

And while we’re on the topic of features offered by the Yamaha Aerox SP…

    Downshift control

The Yamaha Aerox SP is equipped with a three-level downshift control system that facilitates a more dynamic experience for riders. It works by providing three shift levels of control to tailor the motorcycle’s deceleration and throttle response — much like downshifting on a motorbike with a manual transmission.

It makes achieving quick bursts of power as well as a controlled slow down possible.

    Final thoughts

The Yamaha Aerox Standard truly offers motorcycle buyers a well-rounded bike that can be used for various scenarios.

    It is priced at P125,900.
