With the aforementioned qualities, many will find the Toyota Land Cruiser very attractive. Sure, it is an “aspirational” vehicle considering its price tag, but a lot of buyers with the capability to purchase a cushy, three-row, off-road luxury SUV will definitely be eyeing this model.

Locally, Toyota’s flagship full-size SUV starts at P5.758 million. Its sole variant sold locally is the ZX.

Under the hood of the Toyota Land Cruiser ZX is a 3.3-liter V6 turbodiesel engine paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. At maximum, the said six-cylinder mill can produce up to 301 horsepower (hp) and 700 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.

Power is sent to all four wheels, and it also comes standard with a limited-slip differential, a differential locker, a handful of terrain drive modes, and power drive modes. 

Like its rivals on this list, the Land Cruiser is a ladder-frame, three-row SUV. And while luxurious, the model is off-road capable. 

For its exterior, the flagship Toyota SUV comes with a square-shaped body reminiscent of its iconic predecessors. Its styling is likewise complemented by features such as LED lighting fixtures, power-folding side mirrors, a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, and a set of 20-inch alloy wheels.

Nissan Patrol

One of the biggest rivals of the Toyota Land Cruiser in the Philippine market is the Nissan Patrol. Like the Toyota model, Nissan Philippines Incorporated’s flagship full-size SUV is also an off-road capable, ladder-frame, three-row nameplate. Otherwise, it is slightly more affordable than its Toyota competitor, with its starting price of P5.385 million. 

On the outside, the Nissan-made SUV sports an imposing look that is a match against its competitors. It is boxy, but it has modern touches courtesy of its huge “V-motion” grille and its set of C-shaped LED headlamps. Other notable exterior features of the Nissan include 20-inch machine-cut alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, and power-folding side mirrors. 

Inside the model is a three-row seating configuration with room for up to eight. It also has a triple-zone automatic climate control system, as well as an air-ionizer. Space, meanwhile, is optimized by a 40:20:40 split-folding second row, a power-reclining third row, and a power tailgate.

BAIC B60 Beaumont

Likewise competing against the Toyota Land Cruiser in the local full-size SUV market is the BAIC B60 Beaumont. Like its rivals listed above, the Beaumont is a ladder-frame ride with a three-row seating configuration. It is, however, markedly more affordable than the Toyota and Nissan flagship models, thanks to its starting price of P2.898 million. 

Under the hood of the BAIC B60 Beaumont is a 2.0-liter turbodiesel hybrid engine capable of producing up to 161 hp and 400 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. It also has drive and terrain modes, as well as an idle start-stop system.

Like its rivals, the BAIC-made SUV comes with a boxy design complemented by LED headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and power-folding side mirrors. 

Its interior, meanwhile, is equipped with room for up to seven occupants. All of its seats are clad in leather, and it also has power-adjustable front seats, a 60:40 split-folding second row, 50:50 split-folding third row, and a triple-zone automatic climate control system. 

Concerning screens, the BAIC B60 Beaumont was equipped with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.8-inch infotainment display. The said display is linked to a 13-piece Infinity sound system, and it also has USB ports and smartphone mirroring software.

Final thoughts

Overall, the Toyota Land Cruiser has the right stuff to face its biggest competitors in the Philippine market. Plus, it has the backing of years and years of car development knowledge since the said nameplate has been around as a passenger vehicle since 1951. 

Take note, however, that the legendary nameplate does come with a heftier price tag, at least when compared to its alternatives. Then again, that’s just the price you have to pay for what is considered the flagship Toyota.
