Nissan has earned a reputation in the Philippines not just for its so-called cold air conditioning systems, but also for building capable, rugged sport utility vehicles (SUV). It sure is no Patrol, but the Terra — previously called the Terrano (link from Zigwheels Philippines sister platform Carmudi Philippines) — has served and ferried Filipino families from daily commutes to weekend escapades.

Modern ruggedness 

The Nissan Terra offers an ideal embodiment of modern ruggedness, striking a good balance between sexy curves and aggressive lines. This makes it look at home not only on mall parking lots but also on some scenic glamping spots outside the metro. 

At the fore is the brand’s bold V-motion grille flanked by quad-LED projector headlamps with auto-leveling functionality, so oncoming vehicles won’t get blinded by the lights. It also has LED front fog lamps and LED daytime running lights. 

To its sides are blacked-out pillars, complemented by similarly-colored roof rails and running boards. Its range-topping model rides on a set of 18-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in 255/60-series highway tires. Four mud guards ensure a tougher look while providing some protection against road debris. 

Its rear end also gets a large enough window covered by a decent-sized roof-mounted spoiler with an integrated brake lamp. Sitting at the center of the tailgate is a piano black garnish with the “TERRA” nameplate. This is bordered by LED taillamps. 

Overall, the Nissan Terra looks muscular enough without being too aggressive. Some level of subtlety allows it to fly under the radar, which is just the type some people are looking for. 

Packed interior 

Nissan did a good job of packing the Terra’s cabin with creature comforts, allowing occupants to enjoy both short and long drives. 

First, the driver is treated to a leather steering wheel with a high-contrast seven-inch advanced driver display, aka the instrument cluster. It is accompanied by a nine-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with audio transmitted to an eight-speaker premium Bose sound system. 

And for those sitting at the back, the Nissan Terra offers a flip-down monitor that measures 11 inches. 

Other notable features include leather upholstery, a wireless charger, and a dual-zone automatic climate control with rear cooler. 

Undeniable power 

Under the hood of the Nissan Terra is a 2.5-liter turbocharged diesel mill mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. With seven gears to play with, we can only imagine it does not shift as quickly as those with a 10-speed system, offering longer revs, which can be ideal for uphill climbs as the driver can have more control of the lower gears. 

On paper, the SUV makes as much as 187 horses with 450 Newton-meters of pulling power. 

For more challenging terrain, the driver can make use of the Nissan Terra’s manual mode and its part-time four-wheel drive system with shift-on-the-fly control.

Safety-wise, the Nissan Terra has the below features:

Final thoughts 

The Nissan Terra is a good choice for families who not only crawl the metro malls but also have a knack for exploring some sports outside the city. 

It is offered in six variants at the time of publishing and costs anywhere from P1.969 million to P2.469 million.
