Toyota PH appears set to launch new Hilux on Sept. 12

MANILA: The country’s perennial automotive leader Toyota Motor Philippines sent out word last week to media about yet another virtual unveiling in the new normal. ZIGWHEELS PH has learned from a reliable source that the new model in question, to be launched on September 12, is the Toyota Hilux pickup.

Effectively a facelifted version of the current, eighth-generation Hilux which debuted back in 2015, the vehicle gets a new look on its front and rear. Significantly, the Thailand-manufactured vehicle gets a suite of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) features – the Japanese carmaker’s cutting-edge driver-assistive technologies which is rolling out to more of its newer models.

The most recent model to get TSS locally is the recently launched Toyota Corolla Cross.

While the familiar 2.8-liter diesel power plant makes a return in the new Hilux, the 1GD-FTV now delivers higher output numbers of 201hp and 500Nm (from 171hp and 450Nm), with maximum torque realized from 1,600 to 2,800rpm. It is mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

Aside from an obviously new front fascia marked by a new bumper, hexagonal front grille, and more aggressive-looking headlights, the new Hilux gets a new lamp design on its taillights.

In the cabin is a new instrument panel. Thailand media reported that the suspension has been soften in select models, specifically the four-door versions.
