Will Mazda MX5 Coupe Make an Appearance at the New York Auto Show?

Manila: Already rocking the Philippine sales, the Mazda MX 5 was one of the most highly anticipated launches by the Japanese automakers. As auto geeks across the globe prepare for the upcoming New York Auto Show 2016, Mazda has already hinted their entry for the event and have claimed that it will ‘blow the lid off’. This statement might be a part of an intended pun as experts view this as a cue to the hardtop/coupe variant for the MX 5 roadster, which might make an appearance at New York.

The latest MX 5 convertible was launched for the Philippine market in august 2015 and saw an overwhelming response from the buyers and auto geeks across Asia Pacific and South Asia. Around 150 units of the vehicle were immediately booked after its launch and had some impressive sales figures in the subsequent period. Even the previous 4th generation MX 5 Miata was offered with a retractable hard-top, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise if the same was being prepared for the latest version. But Mazda has revealed that the new vehicle will be contrary to everyone’s expectations and hence, the possibility of a non-convertible coupe also comes in the picture.

Even if Mazda brings out an MX5 Coupe to add to its fleet, fans might not get to see many drastic changes to the design or the drivetrain. It employs a 2.0-litre SkyActiv engine that is also featured in the CX5 that produces 167 hp and 190 nm of torque. The transmission options include both automatic and manual gearbox and both are speculated to make a return in the new hardtop version. Since nothing has yet been confirmed by the manufacturers, we can only speculate and hope for the new reveal to be a hardtop version of the Mazda MX 5 when the event commences on the 23rd of March.
