Would we see next-gen Toyota Tamaraws in local races?

MANILA: Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) is studying the potential of the next-generation Tamaraw for racing. 

During the Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup’s second leg (which was held at the streets of Villar City in Cavite), TMP Assistant Vice President Andy Ty told Zigwheels Philippines Managing Editor Ruben Manahan IV that the company is studying the competitive capabilities of the light commercial vehicle, which is currently in its first stage of development. 

“Once we see the maximum potential of the Tamaraw, then we will see if we need to dial it back to make it reliable for a one-make race, or if we can enter it in other race series,” Ty said. 

“This is a racing concept that first started in March. So, in a little over two months, this is stage one, and we still want to continue to see what the maximum potential is for the Tamaraw. There have been some limited upgrades and modifications done to it, which we are happy about. But we think the Tamaraw can be more than this,” he clarified. 

To note, TMP fielded souped-up versions of the next-generation Tamaraw during the two-day motorsport event. The said vehicles were built in collaboration with Autoplus. 

Below are its notable upgrades: 

• Intake from aFe
• Intercooler from BRD
• Exhaust from HKS
• Coilovers from Tein 
• Shock absorbers (with slight fitting modifications) taken from Toyota Innova 
• Locally-sourced carbon hood 
• Bucket seats from Recaro 
• Safety harness from OMP 
• Limited slip differential from Toyota Racing Development 

In addition to the mechanical components, Luis Gono from Autoplus told the publication that the race-spec next-generation Toyota Tamaraw has also undergone some tuning. Its electronic control unit was remapped by Constant Racing.

As a result, it is able to dish out  the following figures: 

Maximum power output (in horsepower [hp>)	180
Maximum torque (in Newton-meters [Nm>)	460

 

Next-generation Toyota Tamaraw 

Straight out of the factory, the next-generation Toyota Tamaraw is no slacker. It is offered in both gasoline and diesel variants and can be had with various body configurations. Here are its notable features:
