2019 Suzuki Jimny - What’s in stock for the Philippines?

Jimny is a name featuring on the Suzuki Philippines billboard for quite a while now. The car looks like Mercedes-Benz G Class and Jeep Wrangler baby figure. Though there is no comparison, Jimny is the closest common man can get to such mighty off-roaders. We are not saying that the Jimny is sub-standard, its below 100k price tag justifies every penny or even more.

However, sprinkling the ongoing Jimny with some fairy dust comes the gen-next model. Yesterday, we reported about the 2019 Jimny that was captured in Japan with what looked like top company officials. As for today, we got our hands on the all-new Jimny brochure, though it’s in Mandarin, this fact doesn’t bound our team of car experts to study the upcoming Suzuki SUV inside-out.

The 2019 Jimny official unveiling ceremony is expected to take place soon i.e. by July first week. Seeing the brochure, it looks like Suzuki is first planning to take over the Chinese market that in the past showed noteworthy love for this car. As for the Philippines market, we are not sure when will the new Jimny replace the ongoing model. But what we can tell for sure is that whenever this car enters the country, it’ll carry a revised styling and improved performance spec.

Before we decode the Chinese brochure, here’s is a small yet exciting fact - In its 20 years of lifespan, it’s the first time that Jimny is receiving an update. Doesn’t this fact make the whole 2019 Jimny reveal more special?

Let’s get started with the analysis of the 2019 Jimny -

1.Platform

The all-new Jimny will underpin Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform. It’s the one on which the 2018 Dzire and Swift are based. This new core is lightweight, thus positively contributing to Jimny’s performance and fuel efficiency.

2. Dimensions

Suzuki has revised the dimension spec of its new SUV. The 2019 Jimny on its arrival will measure 3,300 mm x 1,475 mm x 1,715 mm (L X W X H). The top-spec variant (we’ll talk about it later) would display a slightly extended length of 3,600 mm and is also wider by 125 mm (coz of the flared wheel arches).

3. Variants

As per the leaked brochure, Suzuki would offer the next-generation Jimny in two variants. First, is the standard base model and the second is the bigger and more equipped Sierra model. Both the options would be available in three trims each - XG, XL, and XC.

4. Exterior inclusions

With its 2019 model year tag, the new Jimny displays an improved exterior design that’s loaded with both attractive and useful features. Included in the kit are - matte black five-slot grille, classic round headlamps, heavy duty black bumper, wide central air dam, five-spoke black alloy wheels, boxy wheel arches, round fog lamps, and ORVMs with turn indicators.

5. Cabin revision

The cabin of the 2019 Jimny reminds us of the new Swift and Vitara, especially with its round control design. Suzuki has given the SUV an all-black interior which maintains the much-needed rugged appeal. On the amenity front, the range-topping variant would feature keyless entry, touchscreen infotainment system, engine start/stop button, and automatic headlamps.

6. Under the hood configuration

A 0.66-litre turbo 3-Cylinder petrol mill would power the base model. The bigger Sierra variant would, however, feature a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre 3-Cylinder engine generating a maximum power output of 101 PS. On the transmission front, Suzuki is giving an option of a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission.

7. Pricing and availability

Price for the ongoing Jimny starts from Php 910,000. Seeing the advancement in the 2019 model, we expect a 50k addition. As for as availability is concerned, the arrival of new Jimny in the Philippines is expected by the year-end or in Q1 of 2019.
