Why should Mitsubishi Xpander be your next MPV?
It has been a couple of months since Mitsubishi launched the Xpander in the Philippines. In just this short period of time, the Xpander has been able to exceed Mitsubishi’s expectations of sales. This new MPV has become one of the hot-selling cars in the Philippines. Consequently, Mitsubishi has announced that it is going to increase the production of the Xpander. So, it is quite clear that the Xpander is doing well in the market, and apart from the facts and figures, the following are a few more reasons why the Xpander should be your next MPV.
Exemplary design
Mitsubishi wanted to make sure that the Xpander would not be just another MPV on the roads. So it allowed its designers to extend the boundaries of their imagination. This lead to the exemplary design of the Mitsubishi Xpander. With just one look at this vehicle, particularly from the front, it is clear that this is a modern MPV. It features high-mounted sleek DRLs, that merge with the chrome-laden, nicely contoured front grille which Mitsubishi likes to call as 'Dynamic Shield'. One odd and good thing about the front design of the Xpander is that the headlights are located a bit low and seem to be an integral part of the front bumper but are not. This change in the position of the headlamps is one of the reasons why the Xpander stands out from the usual crowd.
The side of the Xpander has got a single but prominent character line that goes all the way up to the rear and joins the tail light. Talking about the tail lights, just like the headlamps they are very modern as well. They are big in size and fills the space at the rear quite well without making things appear out of place. The rear roof-mounted spoiler adds a touch of sportiness.
Spacious interior and its features
Mitsubishi has implemented its ‘Omotenashi Principle’ in the interior of the Xpander. This principle is focused on providing a great hospitality. Therefore, the interior of the Xpander has to be generous without compromising on comfort. Following this principle, Mitsubishi has provided a sliding function in the second row of seats which creates more legroom. There is a good amount of space available for all the occupants to move around.
The Xpander is a 7-seater MPV and it should be capable to carry not just people but a good amount of luggage as well. So for that Mitsubishi has provided a large boot which can be expanded further by folding down both the second and third row of seats to 1,630 liters. Moreover, the Xpander is the first vehicle in its segment to feature a flat luggage floor which allows the loading and unloading of luggage quite easy.
In terms of features, there is a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system placed in the center of the dashboard. It offers Bluetooth connectivity, GPS navigation, and Easy Link smartphone connectivity. The audio controls are mounted on the steering wheel. You also get cruise control. There are 12V power outlets for both the second and third row. You will also find air-con vents on the roof of the car for the rear passengers.
Safety features
Mitsubishi Xpander has attained a respectable 4-star safety rating in the ASEAN NCAP tests. This makes it quite a safe MPV to be in. It offers various safety features like ABS with EBD, Hill Start Assist, Traction control, and Vehicle Stability Assist. Mitsubishi has used its proprietary RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) unibody construction in the Xpander which is supposed to provide high safety standards.
Engine and performance
The Xpander comes with only a single engine option - a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder MIVEC petrol engine that churns out 105 hp of max power at 6,000 revs and generates 141 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 revs. It comes mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. You can also opt for the 5-speed manual gearbox.
The power and torque figures might not sound a lot, but they should be more than sufficient to provide an optimal balance between performance and economy.
The Mitsubishi Xpander is available in the Philippines at a starting price of PHP 885,000 for the base model.
