MANILA: A camouflaged, near-production prototype of the Porsche Cayenne Electric was sent by the German carmaker to participate in the Shelshey Walsh hill climb to prove its mettle.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Which record did the Porsche Cayenne Electric break?
The Porsche Cayenne Electric broke the Shelshey Walsh hill climb record for fastest SUV.How much can the Porsche Cayenne Electric tow?
The Porsche Cayenne Electric is rated with a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms. The soon-to-be-launched nameplate accomplished its record-gathering mission and showcased to the public its penchant for performance and practicality.
“For more than 20 years, the Porsche Cayenne has been characterized by its unique versatility. The all-electric version will build on this and combine performance, everyday usability, long-distance comfort and off-road suitability better than ever,” the company wrote in a press release.
Breaking records
One of its impressive feats at the Shelshey Walsh hill climb is its record-breaking run, dethroning the previous title holder for fastest sport utility vehicle (SUV) by more than four seconds.
According to the Stuttgart-based automaker, the Porsche Cayenne Electric completed the hill climb at 31.28 seconds.
Porsche also reported that the prototype passed the first 60 yards (54.86 meters) in 1.94 seconds — an accomplishment that only single-seater race cars equipped with slick tires built specifically for this purpose managed to achieve.
“...it gives an idea of the exceptional accelerative performance of Porsche’s new all-electric SUV, which was fitted with conventional summer tires,” the company commented.
It was also equipped with the Porsche Active Ride, which will be offered by the marque in the SUV in the future.
“Porsche Active Ride significantly expands the range between driving dynamics and ride comfort in the new Cayenne,” Porsche Cayenne Product Line Vice President Michael Schätzle stated.
Commendable towing capability
Another highlight of the camouflaged Porsche Cayenne Electric’s quick outing was its presentation of how much it can tow.
During the said stint, the all-electric SUV hauled a classic car more than 100 years old and weighing more than two tons (total weight with the trailer totaled three tons).
It does, Porsche pointed out, meet all the requirements to be one of the first battery electric vehicles in the world to achieve a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tons (3,500 kilograms).
“Our customers have always appreciated the high utility value of the Cayenne,” Schätzle noted.
“That's why we didn't want to make any compromises in the development of the all-electric model,” he added.
Next public appearance
Porsche is planning a second public appearance for the camouflaged Cayenne Electric. The prototype will make attendance at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed, which is scheduled this Thursday to Sunday — July 10 to 13.
