Porsche presents wireless EV charging tech for Cayenne Electric
Like a wireless smartphone charging pad, except for your car
MANILA: Porsche has developed a way for users to wirelessly charge their electric vehicles (EV). The said technology, which has been available for smartphones for quite some time now, is presented at the ongoing IAA Mobility Show together with the Cayenne Electric prototype.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
When will the Porsche Wireless Charging (PWC) device be introduced to the global market?
The PWC device will be introduced to the global market in 2026.Which Porsche model can use the PWC?
The first-ever Porsche model that will be able to use the PWC is the Cayenne Electric.“Ease of use, suitability for everyday use, and charging infrastructure are still the decisive factors when it comes to the acceptance of electric mobility,” Deputy Chairman and Member of the Executive Board, Research and Development at Porsche AG, Dr. Michael Steiner said.
“We are proud that inductive charging will soon be available in series production at Porsche. Charging an electric car at home has never been so easy and convenient,” Steiner added.
The Porsche Wireless Charging (PWC) device comes in the form of a floor-mounted 11-kilowatt (kW) base plate that will eschew the need to install a wallbox or a control unit. The said technology is likewise touted to save space in one’s garage. Paired with the floor unit is a PWC receiver that will be made as an option for the Cayenne Electric - the first-ever Porsche nameplate that will be made compatible with the PWC.
The German carmaker also shared that the sales for the said charging technology will commence in 2026 through Porsche Centers worldwide and the online Porsche Shop.

How the Porsche wireless EV charging works
To note, the EV charging receiver requires a distance of only a few centimeters from the base plate in order to work. Luckily, the Cayenne Electric is capable of lowering its ride height. Meanwhile, the base plate comes with a motion detector to activate automatically. At the same time, the motion detector allows the PWC system to automatically cut off the charging process if a living creature comes between the vehicle and the wireless floor plate device.
According to the carmaker, power is translated via a copper transmitter coil and ferrites inside the base plate. The in-vehicle receiver, meanwhile, uses a rectifier to convert the AC to direct current (DC) to fill up the Cayenne Electric’s battery pack.
The Stuttgart-based car company likewise made sure that the Cayenne Electric’s receiver unit and the PWC base plate itself are weather-proof. The brand even certified that it is suitable for “outdoor use” and is designed to withstand punishment - like accidentally driving over it with your Cayenne Electric.
Porsche, however, has yet to share charge times when using the PWC device, although it was confirmed that it already meets stringent US and European safety standards.

For now, we still don’t know if the Cayenne Electric will reach the Philippine market, but its Cayenne E-Hybrid sibling is available from PGA Cars.
Launched in 2023 together with the all-electric Taycan, the Philippine-spec Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor that was integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission. At maximum, the said system can generate up to 464 horsepower and 650 Newton-meters of torque.
Other notable features of the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid include, but are not limited to:
- Two-chamber air suspension system
- 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster
- 12.3-inch central display
- Optional 10.9-inch passenger screen
