A Mitsubishi Montero Sport with 1488-litre cargo space?

MANILA: The love for the SUVs is on the rise. So much so that the manufacturers have started shifting their focus to the segment. One of the more sought after is the Pick-up Passenger Vehicle (PPV) segment. While these vehicles come donning some muscular SUV looks, the ruggedness they provide cannot be doubted either.

To benefit from the drifting customer interest, Mitsubishi has jumped into the flowing waters with the Shogun Sport Commercial. No need to stress your brain cells, the SUV is basically a Montero Sport with a different name for the UK market.

Well, how would you like an SUV with cargo space as big as 1488-litre? Wouldn't it be quite a treat, ha? That is just what the Shogun Sport Commerical brings along. While there is Valentine’s essence in the air and people are coming together, the Shogun Sport Commercial has broken up with its second and third row.

The humungous cargo space of 1488-litre comes at a cost though, and that is the loss of two rows. The SUV is now reminiscent to the single cab L200 or Triton, however, with a closed cabin. Replacing the seats is a carpeted load space.

Dimensions wise, the load area is 1920mm long, 1000mm wide (at the narrowest point), and 1040 mm high. The SUV provides you with a load capacity of 605-kg and a maximum towing capacity of up to 3100-kg (braked).

The changes make the Shogun Sport Commercial a not for everyone SUV. However, the population which always wanted a big SUV with a protected load space is going to love it, for sure.

In case you are thinking if this has been done before, the answer is yes. Another Japanese manufacturer, Toyota, did something similar with the Land Cruiser Prado and released a utility version of the SUV. However, as the SUV was intended to carry weights, Toyota removed a ton of features from the tweaked Land Cruiser Prado. Mitsubishi, on the other hand, has kept the features and amenities intact.

The Shogun Sport Commercial continues to boast adaptive cruise control, chrome trim pieces, alloy wheels, four-wheel drive with electronic settings for terrain, Bluetooth, and more. Power comes from a MIVEC turbodiesel motor that produces 184 PS. It is the same mill that we get in our Montero Sport.

The move is an intelligent one by Mitsubishi. We believe the same would work great in the ASEAN region as well and Mitsubishi Philippines should consider throwing a piece at us as well. What do you say?
