Mitsubishi Montero Sport: Top alternatives
The Mitsubishi Montero Sport is still one of the reigning bestsellers in the Philippines. After three generations, this popular 7-seater SUV has become both a status symbol and a versatile family car. The automaker recently gave the Montero Sport a facelift with Mitsubishi’s newest design language.
The Montero Sport is available in two variants: the GLS and GT. The front grille has been replaced with Mitsubishi’s new ‘Dynamic Shield” grille — the automaker’s newest benchmark which can also be seen in their latest lineup of vehicles. Compared to other SUVs, the Montero Sport features signature three-tier headlights and extended vertical taillights that give it a premium look.
There is still a large amount of cabin space inside, plus the third row of seats can be folded down to expand the cargo space. On top of that, the seats can be folded down flat to the floor thanks to an exclusive feature in the Montero Sport.
The model is available in both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive and sits on a ladder-frame chassis. All variants are powered by a 2.4L 4 In-line 16 Valves Clean Diesel (4N15) engine that has a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) and Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) System.
It can generate 176 hp of power and 430 Nm of torque and can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission. We listed the price for each variant below:

However, regardless of how impressive the Montero Sport is, there are still a number of models in the SUV segment that tend to be overlooked. If you’re considering other options with the Montero Sport, we listed the top alternatives you should check out.
Toyota RAV4
The earlier RAV4 did not focus much on aesthetics. Toyota’s designers recently gave the RAV4 a sportier upgrade, ditching its rounded shape for a boxier one, to compete with modern SUVs. The latest RAV4 took inspiration from Toyota’s rugged SUV lineup, such as the Tacoma and 4Runner. To top it off, it also features a new hexagonal grille and angular flared wheel arches that add to its athletic appearance.
The RAV4 is also powered by Toyota's new 2.5-liter A25A-FKS Dual-VVTi gasoline engine. It can generate a whopping 203 hp and 243 Nm of torque. The engine can be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and all variants come in front-wheel drive.
Toyota RAV4 price range between P1,071,000 -P2,240,000.
Honda CR-V
Honda has also been upgrading its SUVs to offer a more premium look and feel. The automaker updated their design language and applied to one of their bestselling SUVs: the CR-V. The latest CR-V was redesigned to cater to the higher-end segment, featuring a sleeker and more stylish appearance.
The Honda CR-V is powered by a diesel engine — a first for a Honda Philippines vehicle. The 1.6-liter i-DTEC oil burner can generate 118 hp and 300 Nm of torque. This engine can be mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.
Honda is also offering a 2.0-liter i-VTEC gasoline mill for the base model which is capable of generating 152 hp and 189 Nm of torque. It can be mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Honda CR-V price range between P1,668,000 - P2,138,000.
Nissan X-Trail
Nissan has also given the X-Trail a premium upgrade, adding sportier touches such as a fin-type antenna, sharper front end, 19-inch alloy tires, and a fun new addition — a sunroof. However, the key highlight the X-Trail would have to be its abundance of safety features.
The latest X-Trail is equipped with a 360-degree monitor, blind spot warning system, and rear cross traffic alert. All-wheel drive variants get some exclusive additions such as forward collision warning system, and forward emergency braking.
The all-wheel drive variant is powered by QR25DE 2.5-liter gasoline motor that generates 169 hp and 233 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the front-wheel drive variants are powered by MR20DD 2.0-liter gasoline mill which generates 142 hp and 200 Nm of torque. Both can be mated to Nissan’s Xtronic CVT transmission.
Nissan X-Trail price range between P1,534,000 - P1,820,000.
