Mitsubishi Montero Sport: All you need to know
It was a sad moment when Mitsubishi announced that it is going to discontinue the Pajero and Montero in Japan. Both of these rugged vehicles have a huge fan base across the world. Everyone was pretty shocked by this news.
While the company said that as of now the discontinuation is only for Japan, we couldn’t help ourselves but imagine it slowly spreading in other regions as well. This made our love for these vehicles even greater.
Today, the 2019 Mitsubishi Montero Sport is amongst the best SUVs out there. With its mammoth-like dimensions, stylish looks, supreme performance, and comfortable interior, the Montero Sport tends to be the complete package. Here is all you need to know about it.
On the outside
Ever since Mitsubishi started implementing its new Dynamic Shield Concept to its vehicles, their attractiveness has improved drastically. The 2019 Montero Sport is no exception. With the latest Dynamic Shield Concept, it looks fantastic. Carrying forward this look are the gorgeous projector LED headlamps that are very sleek.
We also have the LED daytime running lights to keep the style quotient as high as possible. We also like how Mitsubishi has neatly done the front grille here. It is all chrome but somehow it does not look too much. Then, of course, the brand logo sits right there in the centre.
The side profile of the new Montero Sport looks well proportioned. Thanks to the 18-inch alloy wheels that come with a dual tone styling for that added sportiness. We also like how the window line has been lifted up at the rear and neatly merged with the roof of the car.
Moving towards the rear, this is where things become a bit sceptical. We understand that Mitsubishi tried to make the rear more attractive by using the long and flowing tube-type LED tail lamps, but perhaps, they are a bit too much for everyone’s liking. They just do not go along that well with the rest of the design.
On the inside
Considering the large dimensions of the Montero Sport, the cabin space should not be a problem. There is more than sufficient leg and headroom for the rear passengers. Also, there are air-con vents for both the second and third row located in the ceiling. So the rear passengers would be at comfort at all times.
For the front occupants, both the driver and passenger seat is 8-way power adjustable. All the seats are leather contoured and use multi-layer cushioning of different firmness in the squab and seatback to provide you with the utmost comfort. There are wood inserts in certain parts of the cabin for that added luxury.
The Montero Sport provides you with a commanding driving position giving you more confidence while driving. There are a number of mounted controls on the steering wheel.
We also have an enhanced multimedia entertainment system that includes a 6.75-inch touch screen which supports tuner, DVD, MP3, AUX, USB, Bluetooth, smartphone mirror link, and iPod compatibility. GPS navigation and RV meter (compass, barometer, voltmeter, and altimeter) display are also part of the package.
Performance
The Mitsubishi Montero Sport specs are common for all the four available variants when it comes to the powertrain. There is only a single engine option - a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine with Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) System.
It has been tuned to produce a max power of 181 PS at 3500 rpm and 430 Nm of peak torque at 2500 rpm. Mitsubishi claims that when compared to the other similar diesel engines, this one is has a low compression ratio, thus reducing fuel consumption, smoke and nitrous oxide emissions as well as maximizing the output of the Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT).
For the transmission, there is an option of getting a 6-speed manual gearbox but it is the 8-speed Automatic Transmission with Sports Mode that is much popular with the Montero Sport as it is designed to maximize fuel efficiency and engine power. Also, Sports Mode is useful when you are driving a bit enthusiastically.
The Montero Sport is available in both 2WD and 4WD variants. Also, there is an off-road mode selector that allows you to choose between the various driving modes like gravel, mud, sand, and rocky terrains.
Safety features
Mitsubishi did not hesitate to provide the Montero Sport with as many safety features as possible. It comes with dual front, curtain, driver’s knee airbags, adaptive cruise control, Ultrasonic Misaccelertion Mitigation System, Forward Collision Mitigation System, Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC), Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, ABS with EBD and brake assist, Trailer Stability Assist, Blind Spot Warning, reverse sensor and camera, and much more.
Like we mentioned earlier, the Montero Sport is a complete package. It looks great, has a spacious and luxurious cabin, comes with a powerful engine and different driving modes, and can handle different kinds of terrain, therefore, acting like a decent off-roader. Buying one would keep you satisfied. The 2019 Mitsubishi Montero Sport price starts at Php 1.5 million for the base model and it comes in 7 different colours - Black Mica, White Pearl, Titanium Grey, Deep Bronze Metallic, Sterling Silver Metallic, Red Metallic, and Deep Blue Pearl. We hope Mitsubishi does not discontinue this or the Pajero in the Philippines.
